You'll keep getting events from them asking you to do stuff for them (usually just send your science ship on a project). The dialogues are quite funny and well worth reading.

well i got it to start and accepted their proposal to transport them but that's where the quest stops nothing happens after that

You get a timed quest (~300 days) to get a science ship to the new location and do the project there.
If you succeed on that, there will be periodic follow up events, sometimes with 10-20 years of nothing.
They are weird but funny.

If you fail the initial project you should get something like that their signal has gotten too faint and they are now beyond rescue.

this one is hilarius, one of my favorites, I spent soo much time moving them around, one of them getting home sick and you have to move them back and forth, and it just keeps on giving research resources to each planet it moves on, its amusing.

It's funny when I complete a stage of the quest line, I see that the planet should have a resource on it, I think that is what is supposed to happen, maybe it was just research points. Anyways the planet does not actually have that research modifier afterwards. Also one part of it caused a planet i was mining to lose that resource!

Not sure what the forum policy is on necroing (allowed, how long until it's classed as necroing a post, etc, etc) but one thing I've noticed about this event is pretty much 6 of the 7 last times I've had it they've wanted to relocate to a xenophobic FE's gas giant. The one time they didn't was one time they wanted to relocate across the galaxy to another arm when I was hyper drive. What is it with these guys and their ridiculous demands?

Their selection of another planet is basically random, so yeah, they can ask you to take them to a planet you know of, but is somewhere you can't get to.

Like them picking a gas giant that's being orbited by a stationary pirate fleet with a third-again more attack power than I could manage, even going over my fleet cap enough to run me out of energy/mineral income. Oh, well. I guess they didn't want to survive that badly...

They have a tendency to ask you to relocate them to a planet you can not get too, like in a Xenophobic FE's space. I really wish the event to relocate to random planet would check for access rights, esp. when they the text says "easy for you to get too."

first time i did this it was plopped into the middle of a forgotten empire, fortunately there was a habital planet there. a little judicious save file editing to give me control of the planet and a wormhole drive and plop.

Well, it's a random planet I think of planets you know...

...So if you know more planets in places you can't get to...

Also, of course you remember those times.

I find this quest chain to be very charming, always happy when it pops up in my game. Like I'm desperately trying to survive in an inhospitable galaxy filled with things that want to eradicate my race, fighting for dominance, and these happy go lucky guys are just so chill living their lives with zero F's to give. I love how they just request me to send them a taxi cause a single person is home sick and yet I could be one of the most powerful races in the galaxy with a fleet that could destroy an FE. I of course always bring that girl home.

edit: Oh, and about the spawn of their new home world; if you're like me and don't mind save scumming, you can save right before the research project finishes and just reload if the new home spawns in a part of the galaxy you can't get to. I can't stand not saving this species, it would make me sick.
