6. Armee Headquarters, Tulcea, Romania

Undersupplied and outgunned, the Soviets were just delaying the inevitable. They would soon experience their first serious setback.

010-1-Ismail.jpg

They would live through another day, however.

0700 June 28th 1944
Eastern Front

The Eastern front needed reinforcements. And lots of them.

010-7-Zamosc.jpg

Von Küchler was having a hard time trying to delay Soviet forces into damaging his divisions.

010-8-StryjStatus.jpg

Model was also struggling to keep the Reds out of Romanian borders. He was in dire need of reinforcements.

010-9-Retreat.jpg

While he could not count on fresh troops yet, he decided to call off six battered Hungarian division, one armoured, to let them rest and re-use in case of prolonged combat. Keeping them in combat would only wear them down even more than they already experienced.

010-3-StryjReinforcements.jpg

Reinforcements were due in July 1st. Fifteen Hungarian divisions would assist Model against the Soviet horde. Actually, their strenght was more like that of six division in terms of manpower, but they could've been useful to tip the balance nevertheless. Model needed every single man to defend Stryj, or at least have a backup force in case he needed to fall back.

Hope you can keep Stryj, it's most strategic point in east Poland. If it's lost, Russians can eat Hungary and Romania in matter of seconds.

Not looking good.

By the way, why are you playing on hard? Isn't Götterdammerung in itself challenge enough?

Lord Finnish - I agree that Stryj is a focal point in East Poland. Losing it does not always mean that the Soviets can easily swarm into your territory, though. Sure it makes things a hell of a lot more difficult.

EvilSanta - Difficulty settings in this mod are a bit different from those of vanilla. Sure I could play with normal; 'Challenge' is a bit on the edge, and that's why I want to play it this way... I am never too sure about the general outcome even after two months deep into the game.

Double update, this time.

Eastern Front

Three ground battles raged over the Eastern front, and only one was clearly swinging on Axis' way. The other two were a real concern, as Field Marshall von Küchler did receive nine more divisions from Brest-Litovsk, but they were not enough to even the odds out. Still, the Soviets would need more time before they could think to muster serious damage to the German divisions in Zamosc.

011-1-MidnightBattles.jpg

Stryj was another story. Model needed to hold out two more days before Hungarian troops would arrive. He was seriously taking into consideration the retreat option.

Le Havre, France

In spite of their recent defeat, they would try another attack. Hausser thought they would attack somewhere.

They attacked Le Havre. Again.

011-2-LeHavreAttack.jpg

This was still a problem, however, as German divisions were still way far from being fully refitted. Hausser had to call several divisions from Paris again to assist the poor defenders of Le Havre.

011-3-AirBattles.jpg

The Americans were quite stubborn. They did not know that Germany would not leave three undefended armored divisions with severe lack of reinforcements without air support. A few hours later, they would regret flying over German land.

Lodz, Poland

011-4-LodzWin.jpg

Some small good news came from the fact von Sponeck had defeated the Polish insurgents in Lodz. Some days would still be required to defeat them all, but von Rundstedt hoped it would be as soon as possible, as three armored divisions could make the difference in the fledging central region of the Eastern theatre.

They loved aircraft as much as Germans did. But the Germans had much more experience on their side. The Canadians would now love their metal debris that once were their airplanes.

Cabinet Meeting July 1944

0000 July 1st 1944
Reichstag, Berlin, Germany

"I have called this meeting so to be informed about the overall status of our Armed Forces. Julius, it's just you me and Speer; I hope you have enough data with which inform us" Bormann started the meeting.

"I do Martin" Ringel laid some paper and maps over the table "I will say it now: things are not good, but not even desperate."

"Good to know. Let us show that 'not good' in detail."

"For sure. I will start with the Eastern front, information kindly provided by our two commanders of the Eastern theatre, von Rundstedt and von Manstein."

012-1-EastUpdate.jpg

"This is an overall look above the whole Eastern theatre in relation of our plans we devised ten days ago. The red line shows what was the front we planned to achieve, the yellow line shows alterations to that front. We have two hundred thirteen divisions grouped in forty armies. Those divisions do also take into account those of our allies. Many of them are terribly understrenght and will remain so for some months to come.

In the North everything is stable; the Soviets seem to be tired of so much walking and we're still waiting them. We plan to keep Riga as it is easy to defend, and we always have a river behind it which makes for an excellent place to retreat just in case. Hence the yellow line in Riga.

The central region is messy. We have several divisions under attack and it's difficult to keep the lines. We hope the Polish rebellion be quelled as soon as possible, as those divisions are needed.

The South is going as we planned. Romanian territories are still under our control and we see no risk of Soviet breakthrough. We are indeed taking the initiative, though we will probably stop such attacks soon. I also have more in-depth information."

"Bring it on Julius" Bormann asked Ringel.

"I will. Here is the Northern region of the Eastern theatre."

012-2-EastUpdateNord.jpg

"The Northern region is the most quiet one. We have fifty-seven divisions there, and they are quite well-equipped too. Few are the attacks here."

012-3-EastUpdateCentre.jpg

"Here is our hot topic... Central region. We have fifty-seven divisions here too but not really fit for combat. Also, five of them are behind the front as they need to quell some tenacious insurgency. We can barely struggle to keep the Soviets from breakthrough."

012-4-EastUpdateSud.jpg

"The South, as I said, is going as planned. We are soon going to stop that attack in Ismail as the Soviets have brought their Armored divisions there. We're not going to waste lives there. Model is, however, in serious trouble. Stryj cannot be held, even if additional forces have just arrived from the Hungarians. The odds are way too overwhelming and he will retreat soon."

"Looks like bad news, but it's still better than having to 'stand and fight'."

"Indeed it is, Martin. We'll get revenge. Let me now take a look at our Western theatre."

012-5-WestUpdate.jpg

"We have forty-one divisions experiencing a heavy flow of reinforcements over the last ten days. Over the last few days, the Americans have tried very few attempts at breaking the new front we established. Their five divisions in Cholet have no option but to stand there, else they would risk to be cut off; if they expand from Orléans they would weaken their lines too much and face a possible encirclement; our forces in Bourges and Tours, despite being understrenght, are still well capable of sustaining an Allied attack. So their only attempt is attacking Le Havre again, where we have fourteen divisions defending and two more, armored and quite well-equipped, coming in two hours.

"Do you think we can mount an offensive soon, if at all?" Bormann asked.

"We can, but not before mid-July; those are Hausser's estimates and I think those are correct. His forces need rest and supplies and reinforcements. And no battles against the Americans. There are also a couple other reasons I will explain soon. Italian theatre."

012-6-ItalyUpdate.jpg

"There's really nothing to say here. We have twenty-four divisions there, and we don't need any more or can spare any less. Nothing happened since June 20th and nothing will probably happen with this current balance of power."

"You pointed at a certain couple reasons an offensive can't be mounted before mid-July, Julius."

"I did not forget about that. Here are the reasons."

012-7-Redeployments.jpg

"We have several divisions being redeployed all over Europe. And they take time, but once the transfer is complete, they will really help balance the odds out. There, we have six well-supplied divisions that will complete their transfer in Braila July 3rd and will be operative July 4th. They can be used to help our efforts in the Central region.

More than ten divisions are being redeployed in Jelgava. This will help our odds considerably and will be operative by July 3rd.

Most importantly, we have five divisions being transferred in Valenciennes, of which three are Armored and in quite good shape. They will be operative July 8th and they will be tremendously useful in our struggle to close the Western theatre."

"That's definitely good news. I didn't know we had so many divisions undergoing redeployment. Speer, can we afford all this troop and material ferrying? Also, how's the reinforcements going?"

"Not bad, but we could do better. About our transport efficiency, it's not something we can really afford. Partisans and a heavy load brought by such redeployments do take their toll."

012-8-Production.jpg

"Dissent took a hit recently, but we're progressively reducing it. We can't allocate many resources to satisfy the population actually, but there's not much we can do about it at present. Supplies are in low deficit but I'm not too worried about it. Oil is going to be of some concern in the near future. We're trying to limit its use but it's clear that we need more trade arrangements soon. Reinforcements can be handled up to a certain extent - we have reinforced our divisions with almost 100,000 new troops in ten days, and upgrades to our forces are something that's completely out of question for now. Our Industrial capacity remains fairly good, though it doesn't compete with the US, UK or USSR. I remain confident that our Armed Forces can change this status quo."

"That's quite good gentlemen" Bormann ended the meeting "It could be better, but given the state of our situation, it could be much worse. Ringel, I hope Hausser can mount an offensive in two weeks. France must be ours before anything else."

A surprise is awaiting for the Western Allies, I'm sure... Even Stalin is going to hold his breath...

THis is an excellent AAR. Indeed you're trying to thin out the allies in the west but beware of them sending any additional forces.

As for the east, that will be tricky, tuo say the least.

Fernando I noticed that a few pages back you said that DvD-IT shouldn't upgrade his troops to infantry 45. Why is that? :)

Looks interesting so far.

Though I am not so muhc into modding I really like the graphics you use. I might have missed it somewhere as I was mainly the updates, but are they "hard coded" into the EWWII mod or can I get them from somwhere else? (Though as a German I'll need to change some flags I recon....)

Clark

HKSlan - Even with the new divisions, many of them still need reinforcements.

Kurt_Steiner - They don't expect a counter-offensive for sure. Stalin is still too confident of victory to hold his breath. And he's darn close to victory, too.

Deus - Thanks. I don't think the AI would send many additional reinforcements to overseas possessions, but we can never know. Eastern theatre is one I am really risking defeat.

mr_clark - I think you could download his mod and extract the images folder, but then probably many of them would not apply to vanilla HoI2, but then Fernando Torres knows the answer better than me surely.

Update.

Eastern Front

Model could not do wonders. He had to retreat before suffering mounting casualties.

013-1-StryjLost.jpg

The pursuing Soviets would occupy Stryj in a matter of hours.

1100 July 1st 1944
The skies above Tours

Allied bombers and their escorts had a sheer numerical advantage, but the few Luftwaffe airplanes were no match for them.

013-2-ToursAir.jpg

Another victory for the Luftwaffe.

0500 July 2nd 1944
Le Havre, France

The American attack lasted two days. In the early hours of July 2nd, they had to admit defeat.

013-3-LeHavreWin.jpg

Gen. Blaskowitz and his troops were allowed to greet the event with some fine French wine, but not enough to let his guard off. They would experience more attacks.

1200 July 2nd 1944
Field Marshal von Manstein's Heeresgruppe Nord, Jelgava, Baltic States

Troop redeployment brought ten more divisions to the Northern region. German commanders thought the Soviets would have concentrated much of their assault force on this region, but they were wrong. Most of the action was to be seen on the marshes at the borders of Poland. This allowed von Rundstedt and von Manstein to authorize some serious troop movement in order to help the fledging center.

013-6-NordReinforcements.jpg

Von Manstein would take less than five days to arrive in Zamosc, but he had only two divisions, albeit well-equipped, under his command. On the other hand, von Kluge had eight divisions but it was mostly infantry and would have to march for nine long days before bringing any assistance.

1700 July 2nd 1944
XXVII Korps, Brest-Litovsk, Poland

Busse was ordered to defend Brest-Litovsk, after the hole left by General Jacob to assist the troops in Zamosc. His two divisions have been immediately greeted by six Soviet divisions.

013-7-BusseLitovsk.jpg

Fighting in a city would give him a huge advantage however; seven divisions from General Behlendorff would arrive in the early hours of July 7th. He just had to hold for five days.

0600 July 3rd 1944
The skies above Paris

All was quiet on the Western front. Only a few American aircraft wanted to visit the City of Lights. Their trip was brief to much delight of Luftwaffe interceptors and fighters.

013-8-ParisAir.jpg

No one told them it was a no-return trip, though.

0800 July 3rd 1944
IV. Korps, Lodz, Poland

One militia division in Czestochowa had finally surrendered to von Sponeck on July 3rd. Another militia division was retreating, but it was being slowly bombed to death by one single Bomber squadron.

013-9-PolishCrushed.jpg

Von Sponeck would reach Lublin in three days. Reclaiming Warsaw could wait; many German divisions in the East were in dire need of support, and only now von Rundstedt and von Manstein could send around twenty divisions to the rescue:

Heeresgruppe Nord under von Manstein's two divisions would enter Zamosc July 7th.

Narwa Armee under von Kluge's eight divisions would reach the same location July 11th.

9. Armee under Behlendorff's seven divisions would enter Brest Litovsk July 7th.

Iv. Korps under von Sponeck's three divisions would enter Lublin July 6th.

Twenty divisions in total would help the central region, and a few more were under redeployment in Romania. They would try to stop the Soviets in due time, or everything would be much harder for Germany.

There are most of gfx that are made by 49h and me.
Some other are taken from GIP and SKIF, with their permission.
So, you'll have to dl the mod to get its gfx.

OKH Reserve Headquarters, Valenciennes, France

Five divisions that were to form the last reserve of the Eastern theatre were being redeployed in Western Europe.

014-1-Valenciennes.jpg

They now had a new destination: Paris.

0800 July 7th 1944
4. Armee Headquarters, Grodno, Byelorussia

Von Rundstedt couldn't think that the Soviets would attack now that he was moving twelve divisions South to help Heeresgruppe Mitte. Grodno was attacked by twenty-two divisions. Not that much, but he didn't want his few, precious well supplied divisions to be scratched.

014-2-Grodno.jpg

"Get me Guderian" von Rundstedt ordered.

He was now talking with General Guderian, close to Grodno "Heinz. Time to teach those Ruskies a lesson. Send word to Kesselring and Behlendorff. Make sure it will hurt. Don't pursue retreating divisions."

"Jawohl" Guderian needed no other words.

014-3-Counterattacks.jpg

In the early hours of the morning, orders were issued to relieve the defenders of Grodno by attacking the flanks of the Soviet attack.

014-4-Won.jpg

Four hours later, the Soviets interrupted the attack and were defeated in Lida. The attack in Baranowicze would be interrupted soon as the attack had fulfilled his primary objective. Grodno with its divisions was safe, for now.

1700 July 9th 1944
The skies above Le Mans

One full day without any real fighting was greeted with satisfaction from both German generals and troops. July 9th would see some new fighting again.

014-5-LeMans.jpg

The Canadians wanted their share of fun in that aerial carnage that were the skies of France. They liked being on the losing side, and this time too they made no exception.

2300 July 9th 1944
4. Armee Headquarters, Grodno, Byelorussia

014-6-Grodno239.jpg

Von Rundstedt was given this report. He was not amused. The Soviets were amassing more troops in the North, and some flanking attacks would not be sufficient. He would order List to retreat and retaliate once the Soviets would occupy Grodno.

014-7-FallBackGrodno.jpg

He would retaliate, provided that the Soviets would not come in sheer numbers of course.

Military Control is really difficult to obtain in this mod, as you need to pay some ~$15,000 to gain MC. Perhaps the Author wanted to recreate the economical and logistical difficulties of 'annexing' one nation's military, but then I shall point out that that amount of money is fairly the same for every country - and thus every kind of military size - and also, something I cannot understand, why annexing costs nothing then?
Answer to why the Balkan countries were not M/C'd right off the bat.

Why don't you change the flag? It must be annoying to censor the swastikas all the time.

Remble - This update most likely confirms your analysis. About M/C I am satisfied that my Balkan allies have lent me a large portion of their armies anyways. I just hope they won't call them back in the middle of an eighty-division battle and move them to their capital. :)

Winner - Nah, it's fun that way. It's usually two or three times that symbol for each picture I take. I have to crop and modify each picture anyways, so censoring/not censoring takes little time into the process.

Update, with some new stuff happening. Or about to happen :)
