Another post here reminded me of this.
So, players (specially but not only the Otaku ones) have been complaining for some time about the way Japanese names work. One idea that I had was to, in the same way the Shogun/Emperor has the option to conduct Sword Hunts, Expel Ronin and such, all assorted Nipponic (plus Ainu, Okinawan and maybe Korean) nations with the Daimyo/Independent Daimyo reforms, and/or assorted Nipponic (plus Ainu, Okinawan and maybe Korean) as main culture should have the option to a few "rituals and customs" of their own instead (or in the Shogun's case, in addittion to) the Shogunate's ones.

- Renaming the Ruler
Gives a one time bonus, plus a much tinier bonus as long as the ruler lives or is renamed again.
I imagine this as that "Name him Alexander/Caesar/Johan" events, but with a list of names that have a specific meaning, as in a military bonus for a warrior-themed name, and such. Which would probably imply a requisite before said name can be taken, or something.
Also a "custom name" that gives a much weakened combination of all bonuses, for those who really want a custom name.
Not sure, but this should have a limit of one name change per decade, or until the ruler does something really incredible that triggers an event for an early change.
- Renaming Consort/Heir
Same as ruler, but the requirements should be reworked for women, unless the heir/consort takes a male name and role, or something.
The bonuses for consorts (male or female alike) should be minimal, unless a regency happens.
- Granting a name to an Adviser or Leader
Improves one aspect of the leader and grants prestige/legitimacy bonuses per victory the leader gains, or per decade the adviser remains directly employed.
- Renaming subject
Similar to leader/advisers, but grants a new name to a subject, giving loyalty and prestige bonuses to both, as fit. Refusing a name may cause an command to seppukku, give a Casus Belli, increase liberty desire and/or act similar to a royal marriage/nominating subjet as heir.
Also, nominating a subject as heir could be a thing.
- Theocractic names
Because I wanted to suggest the Shaolin Monastery, and some other temples, as monuments (and I hate the current mechanics involving the Dalai Lama), I have been thinking of changes for non-Christian Monastic States and a Shinto Theocracy. Including the same mechanics mentioned above, but different bonuses and names list for them.
