Axis Alliance from '36?

I'd like to make my life as difficult and uncomfortable as possible. When playing as US or USSR that is ;-)

Would editing the relationships between the Axis to compel a starting alliance actually help with this? I'm concerned that certain events leading up to the war would be badly impacted.

Apart from the strategic benefits vs USSR I'd expect some blueprint swapping - I'm posting in the DAIM thread because I was planning on using it with a view to the difficult/uncomfortable bit, but I was wondering whether I should be aiming to revise research priorities to get the best benefit ie Germany researching Land, Italy Air, Japan Sea.

Apologies for the generic question but I've only just started playing (I'm in the UK) and only have limited time for modding.

Update - now with UK, USA and NatChina

Almost 1000 downloads give us more than a reason to continue our work for the more Determined AI Modification. Thanks for your confidence and your support! :)
We're happy to announce that we completed a major update, the existing DAIM AIs have been revised and new ones added for the United Kingdom, the US of A and Nationalist China. For details please consult the country specific threads, the list can be found in the first post of this thread and they'll be updated in a couple of minutes.

If you want to play with the entire set of changed AIs, download from the Bigpack link above and unzip the file in your HoI 2 folder. If you have the old version of the Bigpack already installed, simply install on top of it. We recommend not to install over games still in progress because it can lead to strange results. Please note that DAIM is made for the 1936 and 1939 scenarios only.

If you want to use only specific AIs from the DAIM Bigpack, you need the DAIM framework first and then you can unzip the AIs from the list below in any combination. There's also a backup available which overwrites all DAIM AIs with the original ones.
Download links for DAIM framework and specific AIs:

Have fun!

Any SMEP update soon? :)
Some people are never satisfied! :D
I had my hands full with DAIM and exams, so an update for my Small Enhancement Package will not be due very soon, but I haven't forgotten it. ;) Feel free to post suggestions in the SMEP thread (link in my sig) because I was running out of ideas a bit lately.

Suggestion.

Germany destroys Poland and then rushes into Benelux/France in late 1939. Generally they are successful, but Germany is attacking with mediocre units and suffering losses. I really doubt Germany would try to crush France in the middle of winter :p

Perhaps delay German actions in the west until spring of 1940? As it is now, It's January 1940, Vichy is alive and kickin', UK declared war on Vichy, Italy joined Axis and DOW'd Greece... so rushed. Also, Japan has nearly annexed China already!

BTW, this is the 1939 scenario.

[EDIT]

Also, once Germany goes to war with Yugo, they hardly attack. I always see Hungary and Italy eat up Yugoslavia, therefore creating a one or two province Croatia. Perhaps a reorganization of the Balkans event is necessary?

[/EDIT]

[EDIT AGAIN]

USSR overruns Finland so quickly they simply annex instead of the "we'll settle" event firing. Tweak?

[/EDIT AGAIN]

A few adjustments I have made:

Fall Gelb date: to avoid the unlikely winter offensive I've created a few extra similar events modeled on the ai_prepare_war command event (event = 20503) that mobilizes the Germans against Benelux.

Basically a check is made during the winter months and only has a 5% chance of succeeding (31 day interval). During the spring-fall months prior to 1940 (in the case that Germany conquers Poland in say, 1937-8), the monthly chance is 15% to attack. Reason here being the Wehrmacht is not where Hitler and the General Staff wanted it (it wasn't). Come May 1940 another event checks it and this is regular at 95%. Just a suggestion for historical balance and yet leaving ahistorical possibilities on the table.

Finland - defintely need some type of slowdown of the Red Army. Armour doctrines sucked historically and their commanders stunk. Add in tough Finnish soldiers and a nasty winter and you have a bog-down. Purges killed the leadership. So there needs to be some balance to the Soviet AI before 1941 that hobbles it.

I have turned the Norwegian province of Hammerfest into a ZERO infrastructure province to keep the Soviets from rushing over through Norway.

Download Link of DAIM Bigpack hasn't been updated

@G'Kar

Hi,

I realized that the link for the DAIM bigback has not been updated, but points to an old version not containing the new USA, UK, and NatChina AI enhancements. The other downloads are working.

I appreciate your great effort, and I only can say: the results are impressive!

Me neither!
I just downloaded again, I got a 125.686 bytes zip file with 52 compressed files, the newer AIs included. I guess it works fine for everybody else as well, because you're the only one writing about it. Maybe some weird case of browser cache or proxy settings?

My latest game

I did a game to jan 1941 as the USA (I accepted all trade agreements and gave lots of stuff to the Axis to help them along). So far, things are not looking good for the Axis. The Norwegians kicked the ever loving crap out of the Germans. The Germans are so enamored with Norway they forgot to DOW the low countries and the fronts are static everywhere else. On the eastern front, the Soviets have 15+ divisions along the front in each province, the germans 3 or so. The Germans have the mass of their troops in Denmark. They took out Poland and Denmark as per usual then got bogged down in Norway.

In the Pacific, the Chinese just creamed the Japanese. The Chinese annexed Manchuko and have Japan isolated in Korea. Totally static in the Pacific as well.

I have save games from 1936 to 1941 in Jan of each year if anyone is interested.

EDIT. I guess I should say I download the Bigpack today and am using that.

Oh, that really doesn't look well for the Axis! I can't remember to have seen them in such a bad shape. As for Japan, well, sometimes they loose against China, usually they should win, and I guess Germany took the "wrong" choice once (BeNeLux) in the AI Events.

P.S. Yay, we got our own subforum! :)

Good question! :p I didn't notice at first, it was probably forgotten to change the default settings. I don't mind that much, the HoI grey style can be tiresome to the eyes IMHO. We'll probably get assimilated soon enough... ;)

Ok, I've run my 2nd test playing as the USA (once again helping everyone as a resource pool basically to make sure everyone has enough resources). I'm currently in the middle of 1941. I played nofog this time to see what was going on.

1. Japan once again slaughtered by the Chinese including another Manchuko annex. The Chinese are just insane building tons of stuff. Maybe there needs to be some kind of passivity for them?

2. Germany DOWed the low countries this time, but did it in Sept/Oct of 39. I'm not sure that is a good idea because they do it when only about 1/4 of their troops are on the western front. They muddled around and ended up with Vichy around the historical time though. They then DOWed Denmark/Norway and Yugo. They still got really bogged down in Norway, not sending enough troops or not enough ships. They rolled up Yugo.

3. They then left something like 60 divisions sitting in Yugo (???) and DOWed Soviets per the historical timeline. Not a brillant plan for them but they are currently muddling around Russia now. Mainly the Poland front is rather static but they are making some progress in the baltic area. They still have 40+ divisions sitting in Yugo on the port province.

Well, I'm going to try a 3rd one tonight sometime. What is really concerning me is that either the Japanese are seriously gimped or the Chinese are just a juggernaut now (probably the latter). My other concern is that Germany is making some very strange DOWs at odds times. The timeframe doesn't bother me as much as doing it without the troops to support any kind of offensive.

1. In the few reports I've seen on the forum, Japan seems to loose more often to China than it happened in Spockys and my trials. Might really be something to look into.

2. I'm already thinking about tweaking the actual DAIM Germany timeline a bit. There's a problem with an event command, "ai_prepare_war", though, in the documentation it says "Tells the AI to move troops to the border with a country" but I get more and more the impression that it just tells the country: "DoW them and them".

3. I don't understand these port stacks either, they happen sometimes but the AI shouldn't have a reason to ship these troops anywhere. The border problem with Russia is similar to the one before the campaign in the west.

DAIMing the other Allies as well seems to have opened a little box of Pandora, Axis mistakes are no longer tolerated. I wouldn't like to go back to a Chinese passivity, but we'll have to see about that.

I don't mind the fact that they build a lot of troops, but there is something else I also forgot to mention. Japan took Indochina in the vichy settlement and China rolled them up there as well. Is there a way to let them keep building but tone them down on aggression? Something like that 0-3 parameter? Maybe give them a 0 or 1.

Would be nice if lothos would give some hints on maybe how to set up a front before a war. Maybe there is some trick or something.

That has to be some kind of bug unless maybe the AI is thinking about going to Africa. But why stack 60 in Yugo and they only send 1-3 to Norway?

I was thinking about this as well. I think it is a bad idea to DAIM everything cause, well, the AI will just kill each other and you got nothing to do as the player :) Maybe you should make a DAIM allies and a DAIM axis. To be honest, if I'm playing UK, France, or the US, I probably want to see a gimpy, weak, wet noodle China that Japan can just roll over. Make a strong Italy, Japan and Germany that we can install when playing the Allies and a strong US, UK, France, Russia and China we can use when playing as the Axis :)
