Have not played them in 1.12 yet, so its possible that this wont work

However what i would try is :
Improve relations with Ming from day 1.
Ally Ayutuya.
Attack Champa and eat them in one go.
Attack the Khmer and eat as much as you can (or if you want to go hindu, only take the hindu provinces).
After that attack Lan Xang and take what you can.

Try to keep Ming friendly and you should be good to go

Have they fixed Buddhism yet?
You mean the fact that it penalizes the player if they play 'wrong' unlike every other faith in the game?

Then no.

And I wouldn't hold my breath hoping for a change if I where you.

The first step to solving the puzzle is ganking Champa and stealing their religion (Hindu)

now stack your national ideas and Shiva and voila you have some nice coring cost discount.

If you can't ally Ayutthaya, there are plenty of options left for you. Basically what you want is to form an alliance to counter them, preferably strengthen with some vassals (Champa for example). Just let your DIP points burn until you're ready to take them down. As Ayutthaya is not a lucky nation, all you need is one victory and then you can steamroll them down.
Tip 1: Once you're close enough you may try to ally Bengal.
Tip 2: You only have to survive until Ming collapses, then you can either conquer the Imperial Remnants or ally any of them to counter Ayutthaya.
Tip 3: You also must colonize at some point otherwise you won't be able to expand fast enough.

After having tried ten separate times to restart I have reached the conclusion that Ayutthaya is hard coded to be an enemy if it is in ironman;

Just tried it and on the third restart in ironman i could ally Ayutthaya. your relation will start at -20 but if their attitude is friendly they will take an alliance.

It's demanding because if you go on a conquest spree, you'll have forever a malus of -10% discipline as every province you conquer reduces your karma.

However, the way I found to contourn that is to go heavy on the vassal strategy. Meaning, you look for vassals to give back cores to, or you only conquer a lot of provinces when you're able to release a vassal from it afterwards. (releasing vassals ups your karma at the rate of 8 karma/province released).
I would also advise to look at times when your rivals are at war, and to ally the country they're at war with. There is a good chance the AI will then call you into war, and will give you provinces you have a claim on at the peace table. This won't cost you any karma, and you'll get +10 for answering the call to arms.

Basically, you have to play differently as a bouddhist country than as any other country, which can be difficult to grasp/accept for some. I personnally, like it a lot. :)

So I guess no trying for that Great Khan achievement thing with Mongolia then, without religion-dumping at least :|

Actually it's not that difficult to keep karma in the middle while conquering China, as there is a lot of Chinese vassals to release there. For example, after winning a war against Ming, take all cores from Jin or Shun, this should be a net increase of karma or close to it (I don't really have the numbers right now). By the next war, you should be annexing your first Chinese vassal and be ready to take your second one.

Of course, this means that you'll have to take Influence as first idea, in order to be able to conquer > release vassal > annex vassal > repeat, but I don't see it as an issue to take a reforming idea with slot 2 (I recommand Economic by the way, those gold mines would kill you with inflation if you don't).

Also, you should have a manchou ally on this part of the world. They're likely to call you into wars regularly. Finally, there releasable cores westwards as well: Khazak, Sibir, Bashkiria and there is usually one of Nogai/Kazan/Golden Horde that gets a lot of cores all over the place but then lose significantly for you to vassalise them in a war and give back cores afterwards (vassalisation don't hurt karma besides the -25 for declaring wars).

When you're deep into the western hordes, you can consider switching to muslim if karma is still a huge bother. This is probably around the time that you're reforming, at which point huge landgrabs become rarer without the Horde CB. :)

edit: I forgot, in the beginning you cannot religion-shift to Tengri, as this is still considered pagan (it didn't receive the same treatment as Judaism). Your only way to get out of buddhism is Confucian or Muslim (probably sunni).

The new patch will make karma go 25% towards zero everytime your ruler dies.
That does remarkably little to actually fix the issue I have with the faith.

If I am at -100, then all that does is move me to -75, which is equal to exactly One declaration of war.

Look, can people have success and even enjoy playing with the mechanics as they exist? I would have to be an arrogant fool to say no.

But for me, the fact that the Buddhist faiths are the only ones that will actually make you weaker that you would otherwise be as any other religion should you play the karma game the wrong way makes them un-fun to me and forces me to place an entire region that I had previously been considering diving into on the no-fly list.

Now, could I mod out the penalties. Certainly. And I may do so. But that does not change the fact that, in my opinion, the karma mechanic is, to put bluntly, bad in it's current state.

As with all things, this is just one man's opinion, and if you actually do like it than more power to you.
