He told me that historical leaders came from the leader file specific to the country tag in question and that these files were located in the db/leaders directory.

This information has always proven correct, but now I have doubts. In the latest patch (eu2_108b_12thApr2005) Johan has indicated:

Johan said:
Since Djurgården won yesterday..
.
.
.
- Added in about 30 leaders for HEL (Switzerland)
.
.
.

But, when I look in the leaders directory I don't see a leaders.hel file.
1) Is the lack of a leaders.hel file a simple mistake???

The reason I am confused is that I also, I saw a file named leaders.txt.
This file also contains leaders and is internally grouped by country tag and seems be used to create a leadertable. The leaders in this file have additional attributes. Here's an example:
leader = {
category = general
name = "Foix"
startdate = {
year=1490
}
deathdate = {
year=1505
}
rank = 0
movement = 3
fire = 2
shock = 4
siege = 0
location =
negotiation = 0
fidelity = 90
}
Most of the location values are left blank, but negotiation and fidelity tend to have values.
2) What is location used for???
3) What is negotiation used for???
4) What is fidelity used for???
5) Have I been living a lie??? Is the leaders.txt file really the source of country specific historic leaders in EU2???

That would seem to be correct, yes.

If the country owns the province, the leader will appear there instead of in the capital.

It's not used.

No. No.

Well son, a mommy leader and a daddy leader who love each other very much share a special kind of hug...

I don't quite think you've been living a lie, it's just that as Johan graciously beta patches EU2 in his spare time, more stuff is getting moved to text files so as to be easier to mod.

The leaders.txt file is irrelevant. You can delete it and nothing happens.

The new HEL leaders were added to randomleaders.csv and are definitely there. Are you saying they don't appear?

Aha! I think there is a slight misunderstanding then. When I (and, it would seem, the thread started) read the change log:
Code:
- Added in about 30 leaders for HEL
I understood this to be historic leaders. A bit many, I thought, but so be it... If this is leader names, I would have written:
Code:
- Added in about 30 [i]random[/i] leader [i]name[/i]s for HEL
:)

I tend to peruse the monarchs\leaders\events files of countries I am considering playing.

As Harvard indicated, I just thought ( :eek:o - silly me ) that leaders of a country would be found in the TAG specific leaders file in the db\leaders directory. Not being an avid modder, I was not aware that leaders associated with a particular TAG could be found elsewhere.

As I peek inside the randomleaders.cvs file I see TAGs and names of leaders.

Series of questions:
1) What is the difference between historical ( leaders in the leaders.TAG file ) and "random" ( leaders in the randomleaders.csv file ) leaders?

2) Why not just sleep/unsleep historical leaders?

3) How does one ascertain the stats and birth/death dates of the leaders in the randomleaders.csv file?

4) What criteria are used to active a leader in the randomleaders.csv file and how is it found/modified?

5) Why isn't there a id associated with the leaders in the randomleaders.csv file? Everything else seems to use ids.

6) Can leaders be created by event ( created only if the event fires )?

7) Is there any other place that leaders ( not random explorers or conquistadors) can be found?

8) Should this thread be renamed to: "Everything you wanted to know about leaders, but were afraid to ask?"

There are many differences between historical and random leaders. The former are scripted separately in the leagers.tag file for each country. For more details on those see here.

Random leaders are the leaders created with every army/navy unit. Each of the e.g. army units created has a generic colonel as their leader. The leader stats are decided from domestic policies settings, while the names are taken from the randomleaders.csv file. These names are also used for random conquistadors/explorers created through events.

Some time ago I was shedding bitter tears and made myself a nuisance in the bug forum about HEL using German names for HEL random leaders and how wrong that is etc. etc…
And now it has been corrected!
Many many many thanks to Johan and AndrewT! :) :) :)

But you can always edit random leaders yourself.

In my interactive AAR, I have made all the participants the random leaders of Venice, and so the forum members direct my armies and fleets into battle and I get to congratulate them or critizice them if they don't perform :D It's a lot of fun.
