Knowing the military as little as I do, I have to assume (because assuming is not smart) that the armed forces of all the allies did not name the day “D-Day” and have the “D” stand for nothing.


So for 10 points what does the “D” in D-Day stand for?

And for a bonus 10 points what should the “D” in D-Day stand for in HOI4?

I was kinda hoping it was named for Howard Hughes making the first bra, size D! Or at the least something more snazzy than Day.

The D in D-day as I understand it stood for day , likewise H in H - hour stood for hour. I think it was a code to communicate the fact that this was the Actual invasion day and hour as they had communicated several planned dates for the invasion mostly for counterintelligence, partially for weather cancellations.

It is more than that, it also greatly aids in planning and training.
So instead of having to tell you commanders that they have to have destroyed the bunkers covering the beach within 2 hours of the start, you just tell them it should be done by H+2. If they need to have taken the ports in the nearest town within 10 days, then you just say D+10.
