THE BROTHERHOOD SETS A COURSE
Praha, Bohemia
December 3, 1491

I, Matthias Tetrakova, Chief Advisor to the King, made my way through a dark, mist filled alleyway in Praha's Stare Mesto (Prague's Old City). Unbeknownst to King Vladislav, his Chief Advisor was also a Grand Wizard of the Brotherhood of the Divine Light. For the past five centuries our Brotherhood has followed the Eastern Wisdom handed down to us from those Romani wanderers known to most as Gypsies. When they first made their way to us here in the lands of Bohemia many ridiculed and persecuted them, and even today they are regarded as unwelcome strangers in our midst. Nonetheless, the wiser and more discerning among the Czech people undertook to learn from these strangers the strange stories and beliefs they brought with them from their ancestral home in India. Through them was revealed an ancient wisdom that brought to its practitioners great powers and the ability to extend life far beyond its normal span. I myself was born here in Praha in 1311 to the advisor of King John of the newly founded Luxembourg Dynasty. I became a Brother of the Divine Light as a young man and soon rose in power and influence both within the Brotherhood as well as within the royal court. During this time the Brotherhood also gained numbers and influence, until we were the unseen power behind the Bohemian Throne. We have Brothers present in every level of the government, and among most of the noble families of the Czech Estates. Tonight we were meeting to discuss the future of our Secret Society. We had plans to expand until we were the unseen manipulators of all of Europe, and ultimately throughout the world. In this way we would be able to accomplish the will of the Divine Light.

As I entered the dimly lit room in the basement of a little known tavern I saw most of the other Brothers assembled. The Great Wizard, leader of our Society, raised his hand to me and, as I took my seat, began to speak to the gathering.

"Brothers, I needn't remind you of the history of our people. How our ancient forefather Czech traveled with his two brothers Rus, and Lech fathers of the Poles and the Russians, with the Slavic peoples at their backs until he came to this blessed land of Bohemia and chose it for himself and his descendants forever. Nor of how princes of Bohemia carved out their nation and eventually gained the title of King from the Holy Roman Emperor and the Pope. Since that time our nation has been an integral part of the Empire.

Brothers, you know that we of the Divine Light have a holy mission to spread wisdom throughout the world. I have consulted the oracles and they have shown me what our course must be. We are to no longer be a subordinate nation in the Holy Roman Empire. Rather we must lead. We are called to carve out for our nation a place of dominance in the affairs of Europe; for as surely as the power of the Sun grows as it rises higher in the sky, so will the power of our Brotherhood grow as the fortunes of our Fatherland rise among the lands of Europe. Thus I call for us to use our influence to guide the nation of Bohemia to the political dominance and unification of the Holy Roman Empire!"

There was much discussion following which lasted late into the night. After we had all taken part in the sacred rites, I finally made my way back across Karluv Most (Charles Bridge) and up the hill to Prazsky Hrad (Prague Castle). My thoughts were racing. I was to be the chief actor in this new scheme. I was to use my position as King's advisor to help direct the course of his policies and state decisions towards the ultimate goal of uniting the entire Holy Roman Empire under the Bohemian Crown. I had much work ahead of me.

I've already been playing and taking notes on this game up to the 1670's and I'll have the first installment shortly. Screenshots may take a few days since I'm in the process of changing Internet providers.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I'll post the first installment later tonight when I get home from work and have time to type it up.

Oh, and Warspite, get it right. I'm not a lawyer, I'm a philosopher! :p I wouldn't touch the legal profession with a ten foot pole. I wouldn't want to get any slime on me. :D

Hmm, very nice writing style. Very Articulate. What's your secret? Cause I cannot write worth a whit.

And of course, very nice AAR. I am curious how successful you have been in your conquests, or if you have tried the diplomatice way of things.

I eagerly await your next installment of this AAR.

May the "Stuff" be with you.

The Reign of Vladislav Jagellon 1492-1497

1492

I knew that if a small nation such as Bohemia were to ever become the dominant power of all Europe she would need powerful friends. Bordered as we were by both the Poles, Austrians, and Magyars we would need to make some strategic alliances, and fast. If any one of those giants turned their on the lands of the Bohemian Crown we would not last long. After due consideration I determined that The Poles would be more natural allies since we shared the same cultural history and heritage. Us Slavs have to stick together after all. Before January was out I had secured a Royal Marriage between a brother of the King of Poland-Lithuania and Jagellon's youngest daughter, Princess Sophie. A fortnight into February and the Poles declared war on the Kazan barbarians. We showed our support for their cause by sending them 100 ducats (Relations improve from -35 to +13).

I also considered that if were were to eventually gain the alliegence of the German princes we would need to develop relations to the west as well as the east. With that in mind I married off the King's nephew to Lady Frieda of Saxony (-39) and a niece to the King of Bavaria (-43). Later, in July of that year I followed up with personal gift to the Elector of Saxony of a bronze statue of himself along with a full shipment of our finest hops, used to make the legendary Czech beer, a total value estimated at 100 ducats. This greatly improved our standing with the Saxons (-39 to +24).

Relations with Hungary had certainly improved since the death of our old foe King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary (the man was the son-in-law of our beloved Hussite King George of Podebrady, and yet he continually stirred up trouble among the Czech Catholics and repeatedly campaigned against us). Word had recently come to us that reform minded Slovaks in Hungary had even begun using the Hussite translation known as the Kralice Bible. These strengthening ties allowed for the Czech-Hungarian Union early this year which I accomplished first by marrying Vladislav's younger brother Ludwig to the youngest daughter of Corvinus himself, sister to the current King of Hungary. I then followed up with an offer for a military alliance which, much to my surprise, was immediately accepted by Hungary (Relations: +55). Seeing a strong alliance suddenly form to their southwest, Poland decided to not be left behind and joined our alliance on April 1st of that year. Our courting of the Saxons also paid off as they joined the alliance in October of that year.

However, I did not entirely neglect the infrastructure of our realm in favor of diplomatic activity. 124 ducats were spent to strengthen the Army of Bohemia (added 8000/2000/00). I also invested resources in encouraging our merchants to seek out new markets in the newly expanding Grand Duchy of Russia (+5 Merchants to Novogorod - gain Level 4 trade there).

Word reaches us in September that war has broken out between France and England, with Milan and Naples aiding England while Savoy and the Papal States back France. Spain uses the opportunity to free themselves of their alliance with England.

1493

We begin the new year by commissioning our first tax collector in Bohemia. The key to growth is always money, and with only five provinces under our sway (and not a single Center of Trade among them) we are not in a very solid financial position yet.

We continue our diplomatic offensive by uniting a member of the Jagellon dynasty to the royal family of Thuringen's prince (+0). Later that year we would we would follow up with a marriage to the Prince of Wurtemburg (+3). However, the Venetians reject the proposal of a marriage between Jagellon's second cousin and the daughter of one of their Senators, calling us unrefined northerners. To add insult to insult they followed up later that same month by allying with the Moslem Iraqis of all people.

Trouble seems to be brewing to the east as Russia joins Poland in their war against Kazan in February. We wonder if their seeming support is just a move to prevent the Poles from grabbing too much land for themselves. Just a few days later word reaches us that the Turks retaliates in their displeasure at the newly formed Persian-Mameluke alliance by declaring war. "Good," says the King when we tell him the news, "Let the Muslim infidels tear themselves to shreads."

Our natural philosophers, who have been hard at work applying the wonders of black powder to any number of military uses, inform us in September that they have developed a new weapon called Field Artillery (Land Tech 3), allowing us to build cannons (I confess I had heard reports of such weapons before from other nearby nations). With such weapons we will be much better prepared to go on the offensive when our turn at war comes. At first opportunity we begin developing more troops in Silesia, including some of these new cannon (4000/0/20 - cost 92d).

In the French-English war things at first seem to be going in favor of the French as they capture Milan. However, on November 17 the Naples Army breaks through the defenses of Rome and the Papacy soon sues for peace, offering 106 ducats in reparations.

1494

Worried about the Austrian threat (our relations with them are still abysmal), King Vladislav dips into his personal purse to improve the fortress in Moravia (Level 2).

Our diplomats continue to be successful as in February the recently widowed Baroness of Plzen married the Prince of Kleves (+35 relations). In August we add the Merchant Princes of the Hanseatic league to our collection of royal in-laws (+31 relations). Of course softening them up first with a gift of 25 ducats didn't hurt either.

The Czech's are not born to be merchants unfornately, as shown by the fact a caravan of five merchant families sent to Venice were only able to increase our share of the market there by one point. This is sufficient to bring in 7 additional ducats however since the value of that Trade Center is so astronomically high. However, the unsuccessful merchants bring back from Italy new insights that elevate our nation finally into the age of the High Renaissance which improves both our infrastructure and trade (Level 2 Trade and Level 2 Infrastructure). With these advances we are now able to build refineries and have the ability to monopolize Centers of Trade (that is, if our merchants could actually learn to compete against the other nations).

Good news comes in late March from our Polish allies. They forced Kazan into surrendering 70 ducats and the province of Vorones to them in exchange for peace. By the end of the year the Russians were able to capture Kazan's last remaining province of Tambow (Kazan itself having been captured by the Russians some months earlier), and they force the barbarians to submit to annexation into the Grand Duchy of Moscow and Holy Orthodox Church.

In retribution for the indignity shown the Pope by the Napoli army through the capture of Rome, seat of the Holy See, Savoy captures Naples and forces a peace settlement for 95 ducats in early August. Then comes some shocking news. On October 22 the Papal armies were finally able to drive the Milanese out of Romagna. Left with nowhere to turn, the nobles of Milan agreed to surrender their independence; and on October 23, 1493 France annexed the once proud nation of Milan.

1495

The Year of Our Lord 1495 is fairly uneventful for us here in Bohemia. Our treasury has been depleted by our previous diplomatic activity, thus our counsel to the King to wait and accumulate more wealth for a while. However, this doesn't prevent him from appointing one more tax collector in Silesia at the beginning of the year.

We do continue sending our diplomats however, convincing Wurtemburg of the benefits of joining our alliance in late February (relations +23). I also manage to swing a marriage to Lorraine around the same time (+8). By this time we are related to half the royal families of Europe and we're running out of royal cousins. Ah well, I guess some problems are good ones to have.

Towards the end of the year we begin courting Hansa again by sending them 25 ducats to show our respect for their commercial prowess. Our own merchants are notably less skillful. Four more merchants to Venice only succeed in raising our share one more point (Level 2 - 14 ducats).

In a surprise move France pays Naples 88d for peace in mid-November despite the fact that they had recently successfully recaptured Champagne from Napoli invaders. We guess that France is trying to free themselves up to face England one-on-one.

Okay, I have two more years to go in Vladislav's reign but it's late and I have to get up for work in five hours so I'll finish them up tomorrow. :D

Good thing your not a lawyer then, otherwise with each illustrious pen we would screem "WE'VE BEEN SLIMED" and have green gunk running off us:p

Instead you are a poetic miracle worker on the page, i can only imagine what your completed works will read like. I look forward to it though.

Great work,

Your praises are perhaps a little over the top but I thank you anyway.

It'll be slow going but I'm going to try to keep up this level of depth and detail for the whole thing. Bear with me though, between a jealous wife (jealous of my time on the computer that is ;) ), my ministry with high schoolers at church, plus school and work of course, I don't have a whole lot of extra time for fun and games.
