Spoiler alert! Although i guess almost everyone knows what lies at the end of the Cybrex chain.

It's a destroyed Ringworld with 20 engineering and 4 living metal. By far the best reward for a precursor event chain.

In Utopia we'll be able to build ringworlds ourselves and the Devs are considering the possibility of being able to fix destroyed ones that ocassionally spawn in the galaxy.

If that idea passes, then Cybrex chain is going to become even more powerful, which leads to my idea:

What if instead of being able to rebuild the Cybrex ringworld, it would be possible to try and re-power it. When you think about it, machine ringworld would be completely different from biological one - machines have different needs and capabilities.

But what would happen if you pursued this goal? Well, for one, if there is a Materialist FE in the galaxy it would ask you to stop. If there is no Materialist FE, then another FE could ask instead. Refusing would upset them a lot and may result in a war with a special goal of destroying Cybrex.

But what if you were to succeed? There would be two possibilities - the Cybrex would be completely dead and you would gain an option to adapt their ringworld as a base for organic ringworld.

There would also be a chance that your interference would awaken the Cybrex.

Long dead, they have once accepted their destruction at the hands of the organics. They would reawaken as a unique Pacifist FE. A FE that would never declare wars and would only defend themselves if attacked, but if befriended could help you immensely with AI research.

The Cybrex would also have a unique role in the AI rebellion. The rebellious AI could try to overwrite Cybrex programming, which would make Cybrex join the AI rebellion. If they failed, though, the Cybrex would offer you help, provided you would agree that any AI willing to surrender would join the Cybrex.

Thoughts?

Question: How exactly will they be awake if they have been destroyed?

Personally I find the cybrex story is one of the most intriguing mysteries currently in the game. A powerful machine ascended race that had the power and will to rule the galaxy decided overnight to retreat to a single ringworld and let themselves die.

Why?

The story is so crazy that I would think they found the way to ascend to an immaterial plane and thus lost all interest in the material things. If not for the fact that they were machines and in Stellaris mind ascension seems to be a biological brain only prerogative.

Or cold this be a hint that machine brain can in fact reach "enlightening" as well perhaps? What's the truth behind one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of this Galaxy?

My assumption (and what I've seen others mention too) is that the Cybrex simply started to question why they were so intent on killing organics and had some sort of moral awakening in which they realized why their actions were bad. They let themselves die because they felt they deserved it.

EDIT: As for the OP's proposal, while it sounds like a very fun event chain, I can't in good faith support it unless all the Precursor chains had similarly impressive endings.
