Just look at how hideous it looks:
ewlands.jpg

No one would ever claim to own or govern this whole swath of desert.
Why not cut off a couple of smaller wastelands, like this?
wastelands.jpg

Look how aesthetically pleasing it would look with the desert being as empty as it should be:

And for fun, have a gif overlaying this Wikipedia map of the Mamluk sultanate in the 14th century on my suggestion:

Let’s fix a crime against mapmaking and aesthetics, okay?

A lot of wastelands (including this one) could use some chopping. I know it would have no practical game value besides being less of an eyesore, but it also wouldn't take much development time, no?

The one on Borneo got fixed, so I don't see why the hideous one nearby in Papua can't be overworked too. Same goes for the Carpathian mountains, the Great Basin, the Amazon, the Kongo basin, Australia, etc.

The wasteland in southern Arabia is another good example. In the later years of the game, when Oman is controlling most of the land surrounding the Empty Quarter, the game shows them controlling the area, even though historically the Omani were a sea power and never actually had any control over the region. So, splitting the southern desert so Oman is shown controlling only the parts of the desert adjacent to them would be ideal.

I’m also not a huge fan of the Syrian Desert because due to the sheer number of the Mesopotamian and, well, Syrian provinces an inland power of the Arabian peninsula wll never be shown “exerting control” over it, and instead it will be coloured as that of the owner of Mesopotamia, which, again, is silly to no end.
