Am I on the right lines here?

Im looking at customizing a mech and adding it to the players initial load out.

1. Copy and paste chassisdef_blackjack_BJ-1
2. rename it to chassisdef_blackjack-BJ-1U1
3. make my changes

4. copy and paste mechdef_blackjack_BJ-1
5 Rename it to mechdef_blackjack-BJ-1U1
6 change "chassisid" in the new file to be "chassisdef_blackjack_BJ-1U1"
7. change UIName, id and name to reflect changes

8 copy and paste movedef_Blackjack_BJ-1
9 rename it to movedef_blackjack_BJ-1U1
10 make changes if required.

11. copy and paste simgameconstants
12. rename original to simgameconstantsold
13. rename new to simgameconstants
14. in "starting lance" change "mechdef_blackjack_BJ-1" to read "mechdef_blackjack-BJ1U1"

I think thats all I need to do, but is there anything else?

If you don't change the speed - then you can skip 8-10.

I haven't really messed with changing starting lance though.

You'll need to add your new files to the VersionManifest.csv. ModTek is supposed to automate doing this, but I couldn't get it to work in my testing yet.

There's an existing mechdef_blackjack_BJ-1-STARTER.json if you just want to change the starting Blackjack without modifying the available hardpoints. Because mechdef_blackjack_BJ-1-STARTER.json is already in VersionManifest.csv, you can make changes to it and they'll be automatically picked up.
