So heres the thing, while i love the idea of governments being able to be selected when in customisation, it doesn't always make sense for an alien society to conform to our ideas of government and system, so heres a new idea, why don't we have pre-set government types, like in EU4, but also have vague catagories, like we have with the race customisation, like a hierarchical system, or a council system, and then allow us to customise our government to choose different things assigned to a government role. a system i had in my mind is similar to a noble republic in EU4, where you have a prince, elected by the people, but he/she is chosen from noble ministers of each respective house, now these nobels control feudal lands in the country which max out at three star systems each, so as the republic expands, more noble houses are created. and maybe we could have an option to openly edit the government, so we can change how much power each minister, or the prince has, to a point where the government could change entirely. i like this idea because it can create a peace-time mechanic, but it can also allow for assassination attempts, corruption, and all other colourful things. continuing with my government idea, the noble ministers would each have a council of six that is elected, two from each star system. these control ministers would have juristiction only over the noble him/herself, and would be chosen from any house, by citizens. i think this whole government idea is a good peace-time mechanic and would help to keep people busy, it would also allow for the rise of great leaders throughout the rank, and each governmental official could have certain popularity ratings.

thats about it, this system may be a little complex, you may notice how i've weaved my idea in to explain what i mean more, but tell me what you think, give suggestions, i always love to hear what the community thinks about my wacky ideas.

Peace out!

More internal politics would make the game interesting, especially due to the POP system being used.

Probably overkill for a 4X game but some sort of factions system like the one proposed in the EU4 Cossacks expansion might be interesting.

Maybe a bonus for allowing more factions (but at the cost of more balancing of demands) and have new factions appearing for every system / sector of space you gain.

(The reason I favour factions over government positions is because I don't see governments from all the different races being similar and so it would be odd to force everybody into a similar structure)

Wasn't Stellaris supposed to be a grand strategy in space, with elements of a 4X game?
