Maybeeee I missed it, but...

Is there a way to make a custom nation in the HRE that overtakes the Elector or Emperor position?

I nowadays often like to screw around a bit with custom nations, but if you delete Austria via custom nations, the whole HRE is deleted - since there is no emperor. Is there a way around it?

And no, leaving Austria with 1 province and conquering it does not count :p

I always thought the Emperorship goes to a random elector, not completely dissolved

If you completely dissemble the HRE Emperor via custom nations, the HRE has no emperor and thus, at game start, it simply is not there. I guess I actually try a bug report, maybe the event to trigger a new emperor can be used for a check on start..

Or maybe a setting option; in the place where you can turn off TI, can have several options like Disabling the HRE/EoC, Decrease Diplo range, randomised national ideas, etc.

I don't think it follows logically, that because there is no emperor, there is no empire.

First of all since structures don't disappear if their front figure does. They might crumble eventually or even quickly. But since there is no dissolution of the empire on monarch death (the coronation of a new emperor is realistically not happening the same instant the old one dies) it doesn't make sense for it to be the case if the current emperor is deleted with custom nations.

Secondly, the empire is held together from tradition, culture and more people than just the emperor. An interregnum does not necessarily fulfill the ceremonial role of a regent, but sees to running the state - and MIGHT partake in ceremonial phenomena. Thus the emperor is not a necessary constituent of an empire at all times.

Of course we couldn't expect PDX to simulate a successor state to the HRE, in the case Austria is deleted, so the obvious thing is to have an event for a new emperor on day 1 (2), and have an option in game settings to disable the HRE.

At least I think so :)

The Holy Roman Empire had three interregnums lasting longer than 30 years, one of which lasted nearly 70. Crisis years which lead to increased decentralization, of course, but none of them saw the Empire just disappear.
Speaking in game mechanics not history
If you got a female heir during a league war hre would dissolve itself, hereditary empire that goes protestant could also dissolve the hre

Which are both also problems, like this one. The Empire shouldn't dissolve itself over those reasons either, much less replacing the Emperor via Custom Nation.

In fact, there should probably be some kind of Imperial Incident or similar resolution for situations that would today dissolve the Empire. They can add a proper global (or at least European) event for when the Empire is dissolved as well while they're at it, rather than the extremely underwhelming pop-up we get today. :p

Imperial incidents need an emperor to pick the decision tho
