So I am playing as castile and I chose exploration as my first idea, and I am wondering what you guys might think is a solid second idea group. I want to go pretty hard colonization, and expansion has another colonist which might be helpful, but humanism and economic look good for some other aspects, any thoughts?

Religious is better than Humanism for Castile/Spain, I'd say, if you have any intention whatsoever of expanding into North Africa. It both gives you a pretty neat CB and makes it easier to convert Islamic provinces.

I don't like religious on Castille nor do I like expanding North Africa with it. Feels too unhistorical to just wipe out the Muslims.
I wouldn't get expansion so early, it will be close to useless and you won't have invested anything on DIP tech. Better some time later.
You could get a military idea, it always helps keeping French on check.

I haven't played in 1.8 Europe yet so I can't speak for the new curia, but Castile is in a good position to go full-on Catholic.

I did Expansion second in 1.6 but that was to get to 5 colonists ASAP -- now you need both Expansion and Quantity to do that, so plan accordingly. Quantity is a big help, though, when you've got provinces on six continents. If I were to play Castile now, I'd probably do something like Exploration → Religious → Quantity → Expansion → whatever else you need.
