Do Cultures in a province ever change?

As awful as this sounds I think they need to create an option that you can commit genocide or force a people to move from an area or something.

You should also get massive BB for doing so.
Actually it didn't really happen that often and the events usually take care of that. Hmmm, now maybe if there was an event to change culture associated with a slider setting it would be conceivable that this might happen and then you would have some control over it.;)

As a rule, no. IIRC.
Well, they sometimes change through special events (though that's kind of rare). Plus, pagan countries change to your culture if you convert them to your state religion.
But generally speaking, of course, you can't change them :)

There was a big discussion on this somewhere in this forum. SUch an historical example of widespread slaughters were Magdeburg during the Thirty Years' War.
THis thread was also related to the topic of slaughtering the inhabitants of a city (not necessarily genocide).

The only changes (outside of Pagan -> State Culture change upon successful conversion) I've seen are in Bearn (Basque -> French), Constantinople (Greek -> Turkish), and Gibraltar/Granada (Berber -> Iberian).

Well, if we're speaking of historical events...

Granada, Gibraltar and two random provinces-Berber>Iberian, late XVI century

Bearn- Basque>French, late XVI century

Sudeten- Czech>German, mid XVII century

Thrace- Greek> Turkish, if Turks capture Thrace, up to early XVI century

Wales- Gaelic> Anglosaxon, dunno when, but rather early

Dunno if there's more.

I think alot of people are confusing cultures with ethnic groups. The cultures in eu2 are simply cultures, nothing more, nothing less.

when Spain sends a missionary to an aztec province the culture changes from Aztec to Iberian. This does not mean that the Aztecs have been exterminated. It just means that they started speaking Spanish and wearing sombreros, etc...
In other words they have become Mexican (a fusing of Iberian and Aztec cultures).

This is not genocide, the populations in these provinces do not decrease.

Assimilation is the word I would use to describe it. :)

So there should be an option where you can assimilate people into your culture. Perhaps a DP slider setting or something....

On the cultures thing: I'd like to see a sort of general event that when you'd managed to hold down a culture for a sufficient amount (with some added randomness) of time you'd get that culture as a state culture. It would be better than the solution where some nations (Austria leaps to mind) get a lot of cultures for no good reason.

Ah yes, the genocide thread. One of the longest.

We all decided it was bad in practice but good in the game then we discussed ways to have a sort of de facto genocide ingame.

Then it wandered into some race bating and then...I sort of lost interest.

For the culture of a province to change. I think at the very minimum it must be occupied for something like a 100 years, or maybe more. Think about how long it took Wales to adopt the Anglosaxon culture. They certainly didn't become Anglo overnight, and i dont think there should be a option someone can select to have immediate results. This sort of thing should take time, perhaps several generations.

Then again the Habsburgs were nowhere near getting Dutch culture even though they held those lands for ages.

There are far too many examples of where assimilation was attempted, but never succeeded, for it to be reliably included in the game other than by events. Quebec instantly springs to mind.

I suppose systematic genocide might be more realistic, but I'm not terribly upset it isn't.
