There ain't any free Celt tags, so only options are:

A) Current system of Anglicized Scottish names and Scottish culture all over Scotland from start to finish

B) Irish -> Gaelic, spreading it over to Highlands and using Scottish for Lowlander Scots.

C) Scottish -> Highlanders and using English for Lowlanders.

EDIT: Scottish melting pot turns Norwegian provinces to Scottish.

C) is not an option, certainly for 1066 scenario. Hmm, you do not leave us with much choice Byakhiam

It will have to be option B. In so doing the 'Gaelic' tag will have to be altered slightly to accomodate Scots gaelic names as well. This I think will be acceptable.

Now we just have to find which names to add to the 'Gaelic' list from the Scots Gaelic.

Isn't Raibeart a bit too modern? I think it should just be changed to Roibert, which was the form used by *all* Gaels at the time. Plus, it sounds like a combination between Raibeart and Roibeard.

here is a list of Breton names (updated), from a Breton website . I favored Breton spelling in all cases: if we are to honor the Breton culture then it should be the preferred spelling.

An interesting note though. Breton is very closely related to Welsh, as many of us know. And in all other Celtic languages the letters K,Z,J and V are (largely) not used, preferring (In Welsh at least) C, S, G, and F.

Its an interesting indication that Breton and Welsh were once one, yet clearly branched apart. Its a very strong argument in favor of a seperate Breton culture. Though honestly I don't know if this is for modern Breton, and mayhap Welsh and Breton were much closer 1k years ago. It may be that in the CK time frame they were not using these letters, if this is the case then it would look very close to Welsh in many cases. So Welsh Arthwr becomes Arzhur, Welsh Ceridwen becomes Keridwen. Welsh Hwyl becomes Hoel. I find it unquie and poetic language. I hope this list can be of help when making the Breton names list.

Suggestions on how to merge the two? I don't think the Scots names should be in multiples (i.e. 4 Uilleam's, at least not more than two at any rate).

Should each individual entry be added that has its own entry, and have both Irish and Scots variants (i.e. Irish Lochlainn, Scots Lochlann) included. (in other words delete the multiple Scots entries and combine the two lists).

The problem with that is that it makes those variants more likely to occur (by having a Lochlainn and a Lochlann for example)

OK, I have combined the two lists (Irish and Scots gaelic).

Where there were similar names on the two lists I have opted to keep the Irish spelling rather than the Scots and rather than add both (where the difference in spelling was minimal). No-one can accuse me of subjectivity .

Exception is if the names are similar but have a relative difference in spelling I have opted to include both.

OK. I got 30+ names for Croatian and Serbian males very quickly, so not a problem. If you can get them from the Grand Culture Mod, even better.

The Scots list was provided by Calgacus. This list was the culmination of some discussion if I recall where the list was made to be as contemporary and accurate as it possibly could be.

But you will note I have sided on the side of the existing Irish list in names that are the same but have slight differences in spelling.

I have a rough setup that I will put in the 'scenario changes thread' based on the new changes made here.

I read more about Bjarmia. And I have to correct my earlier views. It seems that some theories think that Bjarmians were possibly ancestors of Vepses (Onega province, where also Karelians lived), but I doubt this. Reason why Bjarmia is, in CK map, east from Karelia, is that according to some theories Bjarmia was in Arkangelsk area. It's inhabitants according to this theory were Permians (Komi people). Komi people are Finno-Ugric group which lives in modern times in Komi Republic (which is part of Russian Federation), but earlier they were more widespread.

Vepses are Baltic-Finnic group whose language is closely related to Karelian. Komi people speak Finno-Permic languages and Mordvins speak Finno-Volgaic languages. If we are going to use one tag for Mordvins, I suggest that we use same tag also for Bjarmians. Currently they are Lappish which is wrong. Problem is that Permic and Volgaic languages aren't very closely related, but I doubt it would be huge problem. Bigger problem is to find enough Mordvin and Permic names (personally I'm not very familiar, with names of the different Finno-Ugric peoples of Russia.) Samoyeds were nomads like Sames, even when groups weren't related their cultures are similar. So I would suggest that we add few Samoyedic names to Lappish name list.

The names of those culture were provided by Finellach, I don't think he has a problem seeing them make it into an official patch. He will even feel honoured I am sure.

I think all the guys who have contributed to the Grand Culture Mod would enjoy it very much, if some of that work made it into a offical patch.

I'm going to do Croatian and Serbian names, just in case...
Two quick questions:
1) Can I use Croatian (and Latin Serbian) glyphs: č, ć, đ...? They are part of ISO 8859-2 character set. I can see all sort of non-english characters in game with no problem: French (or Turkish) c with a funny thing under it, German umlauts and so on.
2) I noticed in Culture Mod that they used several instances of the same name in order to increase the probabilty of the name occuring:

westernslavic;male;Zdeslav
westernslavic;male;Zdeslav
....
IMHO, this is an overkill.
I could do it, but it is a guessing game, particulary for females.

1) The special characters have to be tested case by case really, since for example I once noticed that "s" with an inverted ^ on it didn't appear in the game, while most special characters seem to appear.

2) This is often intentional to have historically common names appear more often than historically uncommon names on the list. Ergo, there is more Williams in Norman list than say Abelards.
