Unit group, tech group, and culture are all separate entities that have nothing to do with each other.
With the one exception that, at the start of the game, unit group is always the same as tech group. Tech group can change during the game though where unit group cannot (as of patch 3.2 at least). Note that if you are running EU3 with no expansions the unit group is always the same as the tech group so it would also change if you westernized.

And I hear that in HtTT it will be possible to westernize the units as well.

Where did you hear that?

Read the last few dev diaries.

It wont just be "possible"; military tech will now always improve as well if you westernize. Youll have different flavour unit names but theyll fight just as well as Napoleonic Squares if you reach the right tech levels and Westernized fully.

I know one of the dev diaries confirmed you would be able to achieve near parity between troops at the same tech level, regardless of culture.

I think it was implied somewhere that there would be national decisions related to troop reform, but I really wouldn't swear to that.

I read all the dev diaries and I didn't read anywhere that said you'd be able to change your unit group. Sure, they balanced them so that they are equal at the same tech level across all groups, but you can't change your group.

One of us is reading it wrong then.

The way I read it was that they didnt make them all equal all the time. I believe you have to westernize to earn the equality, hence your unit group is improving.

I agree that the wording is confusing, but I stuck with the part between parenthesis.

I would only add to the above that all unit types should now be of comparably quality to Western ones, as long as they are of a similar tech level. (So that if you succeed in westernizing, you will no longer be stuck with inferior troops.) And with that, I bid you farewell.

Ill readily admit that the first sentence seems to make you right, whereas the part I bolded is what I remembered. I guess that its possible that unittypes were simply abolished altogether, but if thats the case, Im hoping they were through the trouble of ensuring that non-western tech groups lag behind in tech sufficiently to allow Latin powers to keep their edge, until their foes westernize. I predict the craziest Ming problems ever if it is poorly tested.

If you take the bolded sentence only, you are correct, but if you take it in context, I believe my interpretation is correct.

I think it comes off of the heels of all the discussion about the muslim and eastern unit groups being inferior to the latin groups even after westernizing and being at the same land tech level. I think that paragraph means that if both Ming and France are at tech 50, they'll have similar strength units, but Ming's are still eastern group and France is still latin group. However, Ming will never reach land tech 50 without westernizing, so I think that is what he is talking about.

Thats a reasonable interpretation, but I must stress that itll come at a terrible cost if they didnt overhaul the tech levels to ensure wider gaps between tech groups to balance this.

I dont want to have my Indian units easily plowing through European armies at the height of the Renaissance - and after all its not that hard for any rich player-managed Empire of a non-pagan tech group to remain somewhat competitive in tech with latin nations for various reasons.

I just want to point out that I think pretty much everyone here misunderstood the op. :p

It's not the culture that he is talking about. It's about the formation of a different nation.. So if a non european nation succeeds in forming Great Britain (or someone else), will the unit type change? Is the unit type tied to the current nation or to the starting nation?

EDIT: Looking through the files my guess would be that the unit type doesn't change. But I can't really be sure. It's just a guess based on how it looks in the save game..

I think that I have to try this out. Have anyone done this before? Eastern to latin shouldn't be too hard. Forming Scandinavia as Novgorod perhaps? Shouldn't be all that hard I think..

I think it is tied to current nation, not starting nation. Junuxx would be a good one to ask about this. He took Ming and formed Germany with them.

Aaaa.. Damn. I kind of hoped I would be the first to try. :p

But I guess he would know then. Or did he perhaps write an AAR? Then I'm pretty sure he would have mentioned it in that. It would be quite a leap for "Ming" to all of a sudden field a lot of latin units instead of chinese. :)
