In that case, I believe it spread because the overall ruler (you) is still considered to be doing the converting, it's in 'your' realm even though its your vassal - you were doing the converting. I'm assuming your liege has greek culture?

I missunderstood your question. Assmilation is to the culture of the king or top liege in the kingdom. If none of the provinces has his culture, then there will be no culture spread.

Find the file:
[CK directory]/DB/spreadneighbours.csv

This gives you which province numbers are connected, to work out the names, open the file province.csv in the same folder.

It definitely spreads easier from one rich coastal city to another...in my current game as King of Venice, my capitol is in Constantinople. My De Hauteville dynasty eventually became Greek culture, and shortly after that, Venice became Greek. A little bit after that, Genoa became Greek. No other province has converted...and I own nearly all of Italy, the Balkans, and Asia Minor.

This is due to the direct dink between Venezia (is that the name of the province?) and Constantinople, so technologies and cutures can jump directly from Constantinople to Venice.
Genoa, IIRC also has a connection, either with Venice, or Constantinople.

Bingo.

Also, because both Genoa and Venice (and Constantinople) are major trade hubs, they have better tech than their neighbors, and therefore will assimilate faster.

Go to "[CK folder]/DB/events/Provincial_conversion_events.txt"
In this file, find the event that changes the culture, in this event, change the MTTH to a lower number (maybe divide by ten?) that should do it.

Dividing by ten is a bit much -- you'll have massive cultural changes completely beyond the reasonable. Maybe reduce it by 20%, 30% at most. Also, I changed the effect of religious buildings to increase the chance of conversion (.9) rather than hinder it (1.1).

I tested the previous and the current conversion events thoroughly and I even suggested some triggers. I still don't think that the patch works very well. Part of the problem is a bug in the .exe file that will eventually be solved, but some of it is also faulty logic. If you modify event 9007 to eliminate the "no war" and the "same realm" condition, you get a cultural conversion event that works suprisingly well; it's even a bit too fast and you might want to increase MTTH by 25 or 50%. Another nice thing about this fix is that it will allow for an occasional overseas cultural conversion.

I really suggest this quick fix to anyone that is frustrated by the (sorry) current state of event 9007.

Overseas conversions will still be relatively rare with the "no war" and "same realm" conditions removed, but overland conversion will work very well.

Overseas conversions should remain rare anyway. Historically, the Kingdom of Jerusalem was only very partially "latinized" with only 10 to 15% of its population of european origin after almost 100 years of constant crusading.

I'm not trying overseas conversion...I'm playing as King of Aragon, and none of my Arab provinces in Spain are becoming Catalan. It's been over a century with no changes...not sure why I'm not seeing any.

It's been almost a century as the Kingdom of Jerusalem, I've conquered Egypt, Syria, northern Iraq, Lesser Armenia, the Sudan, Aleppo and Mesopatamia, but I have yet to see ONE province go Catholic, and I cannot even cheat by provevent 1084!
