I just noticed something really powerful in IN 3.1

Teutonic Order starts with an animist province with Lithuanian culture.

So I set a missionary to work, then set funding to zero giving him a zero percent chance to convert but giving a good chance of animist zealots rising. They rose after about a year, I let them siege the province, they then went to Wenden next door and I retook the province, unfortuantly they decided to loop back after converting Wendan (which I can make prussian now!).

Can I actually use this to culturally convert Europe, or would this be unfeasably difficult.

That is actually a pretty interesting idea. I've done that before with pagan provinces in Africa and Asia but I hadn't ever thought of doing that with the TO.

It would be cool if someone attempted this in an AAR. :D

I'm totally going to try and pull this off, the only issues I'm running into is making the stupid zealots go where I want them to.
Their choice of location is programmed in the rebel_types file. Religious rebels will never go to a rebel-controlled province of their religion, and only to a rebel-controlled province if there is no other choice. After that, they favor provinces without any units in them and provinces with high revolt risk, but their ideal province would be one that is next to a province of their own religion that was not forced to convert by them.

This means you have some limited influence over them: stick units (even 1,000 men) in provinces you don't want them to go to and they will be more likely to choose another.

that's strange since their behavior doesn't seem to fit that pattern. When I first had the rebels pop out they went from Sanigota (sic?) to Wenden, while in Wenden I started sieging San to retake it. They then came back to try to break the siege. The next time they spawned they took the same path but I avoided sieging and they went into Pskov which was kind of annoying. Novgorod had taken Pskov out already and they came in and bounced them out. They then tried to go back to Pskov, almost like they keep trying to go to the same province repeatedly.

Shouldn't be too hard to cleans at least your provinces with that tactic just use exponentiality 1->2->4->8 etc. That is if you can retake things fast enough once the snowball is on the move.

Place troops in the provinces around the rebels except in the one you want them to go next. Then attack them with another stack, they will then retreat to the one place they can go(if they survive).

Tried it in india in a game. Got a bit boring after a while but it works.

OK I started a fresh game and it's running a WHOLE lot better.

Started as Teutonic Order difficulty normal, all options normal except lucky nations which was disabled.

First order of business was to take Riga, this got me embroiled in a massive war with Bohemia, which kinda sucked since they just marched through Poland to get to me. Got my first missionary, set missionary funding to zero and let him go at it at the province.

Still at war with Bohemia but managed to annex Riga. First thing I did was stop him from sieging Samogitia, he ran towards Riga and I let him siege and force convert. Then he came back to Samogitia, leading me to believe that they purposefully gun for active missionaries. I let him siege it out then he ran off to Wenden, let him siege then he ran off to Livland (great so far). Still at war with Bohemia, but I've got them by the balls, own half their provinces and am bouncing their army around.

Interesting thing happened. I noticed that Riga is now a colony... WTF, I thought that was impossible! Apparently not with rebels, so I sent a colonist there to colonial convert. Currently I've got rebels sieging livland, hopefully they loop around and only hit my provinces and don't move into Russia, or I'll have to beat down on Novgorod and Pskov and nobody wants that!.

Riga has something like 1005 population, probably got into negative base growth with siege + looted + if owned by you and different religion -3 base growth for tolerance.. = something like -5% growth or something... Too bad I didnt think about that, Im playing my Teutonic campagin but I already converted Samogitia by 1410...

Religious conversion gives an immediate -25% to the provincial population, as the zealots don't have a whole lot of time to spend preaching the holy word, so they tend to resort to fire and sword conversions. That would easily knock a province that just barely has a city back into colonial status. This is actually the first time I've thought of that as a possible plus though. I really need to take a look at the populations of some provinces now. You don't lose a great whack of pop when they take a province that is already their religion though, though you do get some bad effects for a while.

I was thinking about doing similar thing, but with a different country and a different purpose- by playing Lithuania, taking back unconverted Samogitia, and having religious rebels spawn there and win siege in Vilnia to convert country religion back to pagan. After all, Lithuania chistianised just a decade before the game start, and could easily go back to paganism.

Like the guy above me said, that would make for a REALLY hard game, but it COULD be REALLY cool.

The big problem is that Lithuania starts out in a personal union as junior partner 10.14.1399, so no starting wars. Could do it as Poland though. You would want to keep a Catholic province nearby the capital too, that way you could convert back, since converting BACK to catholic is what changes the culture, which is the whole point to all of this.

The other big problem is that it's hard to get force conversion zealots running around early game sacking provinces to colony size and what not, since all of Europe is catholic and you won't see the reformation for quite a while at game start. Could be usefull on the edges of christendom though.
