After 1.8 - and before buying AoW - I managed to play the game. I bought the expansion and while I waited, I decided to start a new game just to check on the new things in the patch. It was amazingly sluggish however, and I decided to finally buy an SSD. I did. Yesterday I installed it, installed the OS and Steam and EUIV. And now the game simply doesn't work properly anymore. The issues I have found:

  • Sometimes I get a CTD after game loading and before the main menu appears.
  • CTD if I try to open the cloud saves little window. It worked - once - but it showed o bytes available and 0 bytes occupied.
  • I only managed to play Ironman once - run the game from the .exe file in game folder. It stopped working since. If I run from the executable, it either disables Ironman or I get a CTD.
  • All provinces show black stripes as if occupied by rebel in political mapmode - even if on terrain mapmode. This is occasional and mostly happens when I start from the .exe.

All in all the game is playable when I manage to load it, but very unstable and Ironman is no longer available. The CTDs sometimes comes with a windows notice regarding C++ or a little window saying that the game crashed - with no reason given; but mostly it simply crashes to desktop - crashing Steam also, forcing me close Steam in the Windows task manager - without giving me any notice. I have tried, so far:

  • Clean reinstall of EUIV;
  • Clean reinstall of Steam;
  • Reinstall of C++;
  • Installed different version of C++;
  • Reinstall of DirectX;
  • Various registry fixing software;
  • Installed other games to see if Steam was the problem - Dishonored, Skyrim, CK2 - all worked without a problem.
  • Added -skiplauncher in Steam;
  • Disabled compressed autosaves;
  • Used the BETA hotfix;
  • Unchecked all the DLC in the launcher;

I don't know if the problem started with my SSD or after the AoW was fully installed by Steam. It appears that the problem is related to Steam Cloud and EUIV and maybe some other game specific things. My older Windows is still installed in my HDD, so I'm going to try and see if the game is also problematic in that system as well and update here. But the problem is that the SSD did solve my performance problem, since that one time I managed to make it work I notice that the game was running 15% to 30% faster and the autosaves were almost unoticeable - It would be a real shame if the problem is the SSD - I doubt that, but I'm all out of ideas.

Thanks in advance for any help.

EDIT: After some quick testing, in my old system, the game works perfectly. Two things came to my attention: first, that I have other versions of C++ installed in my old system, like half dozen more. Secondly, that some people have brought to my attention that placing a letter such as Z for main drive can cause problems. What remains to be done is to find, install and test every version of C++ I have in the old OS to the new one. I'll see how that turns out.

UPDATE: I've updated every single thing in my new system and it's all okay. All other games I have work perfectly. Except for EUIV. Currently, I'm using the workaround of using the .exe file and I restart when I find any bugs - of which there are many. In a nutshell, the Steam Cloud seems to be bugged and I can't use - not even access it.

Your problems sound very similar, if not identical, to my own. And your system specs are similar in terms of processor, 32 bit, and 8gb ram (apparently only half of which gets used by 32bit system?). The line from Paradox right now seems to be 'Y U no have 64 bit?!?!'. I looked and found that when I bought my Windows 7 it came with both 32 and 64 bit discs. I'm considering making that plunge today, see if it makes a difference, since apparently my system can handle 64 bit (According to the windows analysis thing). You sound pretty savy in terms of reinstalling stuff so you might want to consider it. In any case I'll let ya know if it makes a difference for me.

Alright, so I took a spare hard drive and installed 64 bit windows 7 on it, and EU4 works fine now, other than being very slightly more sluggish than it was in 1.7. So it looks like Paradox succeeded in creating a patch that you have to have more than 4gb of Ram to successfully use. GJ Paradox.

No. 1.8 (apparently) needs more than 2gb of memory, which is all that 32bit Windows allows any application by default. What you had before was

Memory: 8192MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 3564MB RAM

Display Memory: 2497 MB
Dedicated Memory: 971 MB
Shared Memory: 1525 MB

3,564 - 1,525 = 2,039 MB to share between Windows and the game, and the game's published minimum is 2gb. 4gb was simply not available to Windows or the game or both.

No. 1.8 (apparently) needs more than 2gb of memory, which is all that 32bit Windows allows any application by default.

I was aware of x86 OS being unable to use more than 4gb 2gb, but I was under the impression that this changed in SP1 for Windows 7. I guess I was mistaken. This could account for some kind of performance drop but, as I will explain further, it was not the case.

So, based on your comment and some other readings I've been doing, I decided to try a different OS - more specifically a x64 Windows 8.1. And it fixed it. After formatting both my drives (HDD and SSD), leaving my stuff on a external USB drive, I used a bootable pendrive with Windows 8 and installed it. I have no idea if the problem I had was driver, software or OS related. The latter does not seem to be the case, since I managed to play normally as soon as I installed it and afterwards too (using my old x86 OS, before formatting it). What really seems to be the case was some kind of issue between the x86 OS and some updates - I'm inclined to point my finger at the C++ Redistributable, but I would not know for sure - after I reinstalled. In any case, it's fixed.

GJ Paradox.

This is kind of unfair, since it appear this was not such a common occurance and mostly system related. It's hard to fix a problem you didn't know it existed in the first place (or can't even reproduce properly, as I noticed).

Anyway, I managed to fix my problem and, in case someone else encounters it, just be advised that even after a clean install of Windows 7 x86, or any older system, you should be very careful with your drivers update and other software related updates. Also, that changing to a SSD made an incredible difference with my FPS. Despite some internet commenters saying otherwise, it's a great investment. I just played the whole morning today and the game worked without a hitch: no CTDs, no sluggish performance and generally just a smooth gaming experience.

My only complaint is that other than AndrewT, I didn't got any feedback from PI and mostly just fumbled around the web for four days trying to fix my issue - of course, I understand the volume of work you guys must be facing now, but you surely must know that some customers would simply "rage quit" Paradox entirely if they have no feedback. Anyway, I hope that if someone finds an issue like mine, this thread can help them.

Ya, I'm not techy enough to know for sure what the culprit is. What I do know is I was good at 1.7.3, and unplayable at 1.8. That's bad on Paradox's part, no matter why. Having a base game with one set of requirements, and then the most recent patch having a higher set, that's not good game design, and you're going to have angry people. I'm fixed now so w/e, I'm just glad I had the 64 bit disc and a spare drive lying around. I sure as hell won't be buying AoW for $20 when Paradox is pulling this kind of knuckleheaded stunt.

It is NOT necessary to go to 64bit Windows to fix this issue, and Paradox have NOT stopped work on it. Folks, there have been 2 whole working days since the release of the patch last Thursday, and we've already got one beta patch that fixed serious issues. I'm sure there'll be at least one more.

Until this can be fixed, EITHER roll back to 1.7.3 in the Steam beta tab, OR try this Workaround:

1: Open Command Prompt (it's in Accessories in Vista)

2: Set it to be in Admin mode http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947813(v=ws.10).aspx

3: Paste this in: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2560

4: Restart

5: If you ever need to undo: BCDEdit /deletevalue increaseuserva
