This may be a little dumb, and perhaps already been answered, but how will the Crusades be held? The kingdoms will send armies to Holy Land? But after what I've been reading the middle east will not be playable. Will it just be an event?

The Muslim states is not playable, but they are on the map. As for how exactly the crusades will be implemented, noone knows.

I remember a while back, when I was still following this game, something was mentioned about making the Islamic states playable... Has it been decided to leave them AI?
That'd really take the fun out of crusading in MP...

Yeah, the Islamic states are not going to be playable (nor are the merchant republics).
Way long time ago (several shushi dinners at least) Sergei hinted that perhaps with modifications the Muslim dynasties would be playable. Haven't heard anything on it since but the official stand is that Muslims are not playable. Neither are the Mongols or Mercahnt republics or pagans playable.

I would hope that as head of a dynastic family/noble house that chose to join crusade, the option to establish a new principality or kingdom if successful,,,would be an option. If i cant set-up the principality of Antioch as Bohemund, that would be a shame is all im gonna say. Especially with a name like crusader kings.
