Here is the last dev diary for The Republic, and as Doomdark mentioned in the last one, I'll be talking a bit about events and decisions.

As you'll be competing with four other Patrician families in your Republic, we have tried to make things a bit more interesting by introducing vendetta events. If you have poor relations with the head of one of the other families, there is a chance that this will trigger an event that starts a family feud. This feud will take on a life of its own and continue from generation to generation. Even if your family members can't remember what started the feud all those years ago, they'll still know that those Morosini dogs can't be trusted as far as they can throw them – and the feeling will be mutual!

There are a number of ways for this feud to end, of course, and not all of them involve the complete eradication of one of the rival families. Some events, including a Romeo & Juliet inspired chain, will give you an option to end the vendetta peacefully as long as both parties agree to bury the hatchet.

With the inclusion of Trade Posts, we have also added two new decisions. As a Patrician, you may petition the Doge to grant you some Trade Posts from a rival family – but only if that family has completely eclipsed you in the number of Trade Posts owned. Likewise, if you are the Doge you can also attempt to usurp control over the assets of a rival family (for the betterment of the Republic, of course), but if you are successful this could ruffle many feathers.

As the leader of a Patrician family, you have somewhat less control than a feudal noble would over who the male members of your dynasty marry. New events can see them marrying anything from a bar wench to the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Finally, for added flavor we have also made several new random trade events for Patrician families. These generally deal with their budding trade empires, and some are positive, while others are less so.

That's that about The Republic. Many of you are probably curious about patch 1.09, so here are the highlights:
  • Ultimogeniture Succession: the youngest child inherits
  • Tanistry: A version of Feudal Elective where the electors must pick a member of your dynasty, but will tend to pick distant relatives, preferably old claimants
  • Grant Independence Diplomatic option
  • Automatic cultural renaming of titles in your realm. So you'll automatically see Smyrna turn into Izmir if held by Turks, etc.
  • Added 1241 Bookmark - "The Mongols"
  • The Reign length opinion modifers are now dependent on how long a character has been the liege of someone, not how long the primary title has been held
  • All merc regiments now grow in max size over time
  • Added more mercenary bands: Finns, Lapps, Abyssinians, Nubians, Lithuanians, Scots, Irish and Alans

We'll be posting the full patch notes in another thread very soon.

Will the Vendettas also apply to feudal dynasties? It would be great if they did
No, these events are only for Patrician families in Merchant Republics.

There is a new dynasty flag, however, which modders can make use of...

Tanistry might be a decent way to represent Novgorod after 1136. It was hardly a republic in the usual sense. If the patch doesn't include the option to form a tanistry faction I might make one myself.

I love it but if I may ask, why the Mongol startdate? Pagans/hordes are not playable at this point and the trade republics weren't very involved with the mongols.
The arrival of the Mongols is a significant moment in the history of Europe, and the date also fits nicely into when the Hanseatic League started to come into its own.

I'd guess that they have only provided alternate names for the surrounding regions of interesting kingdoms, and left the grinding part of "What would Russian provinces be called if it had a Ghanian ruler?" for modders!
Yes, this is mostly it. For now the focus has mostly been on Iberia and Anatolia, but there is some other stuff as well.

Modders are welcome to go nuts with this, though. :)

Patch 1.09 looks awesome, especially being finally able to grant independence from the diplomatic window and cultural renaming of provinces!
But I've yet to get an official response from the devs on this:
Will it be save-compatible with 1.08 (I'd wager not)?
It should be semi-compatible, but since this is a fairly significant update some issues might crop up. Safest bet is always to start a new game.

So we have Wasqah and will be renamed to Huesca, if Aragon conquer it, for exemple?
York becomes Jorvik when held by Scandinavians, and Adrianopolis becomes Edirne when held by the Turks, etc.

If someone makes a minimod just providing alternate place names with this new feature I bet it has a good chance of being incorporated into a future patch (as happened with the dynasty mod for EU3)...

Can someone explain how the cultural naming thing works? I really don't get where the names are pulled from...
Alternate cultural names are added to the landed titles file, right down to individual baronies. As you can imagine, this can be taken very far and Russian names could be added to titles in Ireland if so desired.

We're trying to keep this down to a reasonable level for now and use it where it makes sense, since it could easily become confusing for players if names keep changing all over the map. We will probably expand more on this in future patches, though, and it is very easy to mod.

Alright. Sound great. Now I have a lot to do for my mod, but this is worth the work. :)

A question: If a Scandinavian count rules York, but had a English King as liege... Would the County be York or Jorvik?
It would be York. It looks at the culture of your top liege.

– Is campaign fund contribution derived from your own personal cash or otherwise something "legitimate" or is it a filthy misappropriation of the public penny for your own selfish re-election needs?
– If you have the same money pool to upgrade your own holdings and palace, and the holdings of the Republic itself, this leads to an obvious conflict of interest: so what are going to be the AI's typical decision-making patterns when reconciling the need to upgrade yourself and upgrade the Republic (to simplify)?
It is mostly a filthy misappropriation of the public penny for your own selfish re-election needs.

The AI will act as if the public holdings are its own for as long as it rules the Republic.

No measures to domesticate the big blobs? (HRE, France, Fatimids and Almoravids). Nothing about the HRE so that playing a count doesn´t become boring after the HRE achieves Medium CA? (which happens in a few decades). Oh, I guess I will keep on playing HoI 3.
No!!! Don't you see? That's exactly what podcat and Darkrenown want!
