By their "products", do you mean Valve's games (eg. Portal 2, Half Life) or any game they provide a distribution system for? You're supporting Paradox by using Steam to run their games, not Valve.
Technically, you're supporting both. Like when you buy something from Tesco, you're supporting the brand and Tesco both.

Hi.

Here is what we are going to try to do, if all technical issues works out well..

As the non-steam version is taking way too much time in maintaining, as well as holding us back from adding more functionality, like decent multiplayer, we want to progress away from that version.

We will stop updating the Gamersgate version, and provide those that bought the game there steamkeys for their ck2 games and dlc, so they can get everything in their steam-library instead.
Paradox is the best company in the world.

Having said this, I keep being skeptical of Steam's dominant position in the industry.

I think he meant if it was bought from GamersGate, GreenManGaming, Amazon, etc. since Valve gets nothing in those instances:

It’s free: There’s no charge for bandwidth, updating, or activation of copies at retail or from third-party digital distributors.

It's "free" the way Google is "free" or Facebook is "free". They're not asking you for a credit card, but they still turn a buck—well more like a cent, but they make a little money off it. In fairness, if they didn't it would make them extremely generous ;)

Yup, I was just referring to direct financial cuts since in the example of Tesco, Tesco directly gets money when you buy something from them.

I suppose this was bound to happen eventually. Well, at least I got one more non-Steam DLC. I got EUIV as a show of support for the Islamic DLC, so I might conceivably install the free copy of CK2 Steam if you come up with some amazing DLC I absolutely must have, but more likely I'll just leave it and move on. Thankfully, I can continue to find non-Steam games from other companies.

Hopefully in the future it will again become economically sensible for you to offer non-Steam versions of games. For those who love Steam, enjoy, and try not to write excitable tracts about the virtues of a digital content provider that you like and I don't.

Also it's not "eating up" your CPU cycles when it runs in the background unless you use one of it's features (like browsing the web in the overlay, or chatting, etc.), and it has quite a low memory footprint.

At the moment, not running anything in steam, task manager claims it is using 0.2% of my CPU, and 21.8 megabytes of RAM. Small potatoes, certainly, but if I had stats on how much memory and CPU an average spambot uses, comparing them would be trivially easy. Really, I suspect I could compare nearly any two things, if given cause.

Well i apologize. I took a look at the resource monitor and nothiced a 0.01% usage, so it seems i was wrong. But that still is quite puny compared to say origin that uses about 1%.

I truly support both Paradox and GamersGame wholeheartedly and have always seen Steam only as a necessary evil for some games I play, so I'm very very sad to see this happen :(

I bought CK2 and almost all my Paradox Interactive games on Gamersgate and at the time I had reservations about Steam. Now... Gamersgate would still be my first choice, but I understand we are in a minority, so since I bought EUIV on this platform, I don't see why I wouldn't have it also for CK2. It's good, in fact, that PI doesn't let behind CK2.

I just wonder if there will be any sign that the code I'll use to have CK2 oon steam will be the one for my complete version and not the light one I had while buying EUIV. It would be sad if I had the game in doubloe, although not so grave since I didn't even find a friend interested to have the game as a gift.

Yes, you will be able to. The Steam version and Gamersgate version have the exact same file structure. Just copy over the save into the savegame folder.

Not happy about this. Installing the game and mods for EU4 in Steam has been a major pain in the ass. (Steam lacks even Origin and Uplay's basic functionality of choosing the exact install directory, mklink is a less than satisfactory "workaround"; Steam Workshop does not work, so manually installing from Steam's temp folders is a major hassle.) I have had to reinstall EU4 about 10 times so far.

Why not just give us GG users a single-player only version without the silly in-game store? EU3 had a superior distribution model to all this Steam nonsense.

I have had to reinstall EU4 about 10 times so far.

Why not just give us GG users a single-player only version without the silly in-game store? EU3 had a superior distribution model to all this Steam nonsense.

I don't know what's going on that you've had to reinstall, but I can say that for CK2 you install mods in the documents folder, so where the game itself is installed is completely irrelevant for using mods.
