Hello, me again with another succession problem. So here is how it goes. I was playing as empress of alba, my son, heir was not in my court so I could not control his marriage or his education. He was at court of my husband, who was earl of some distant land. Anyway my heir got some children which I could not control as well so my whole line of succession was in hand of useless bots who of course messed everything up. My empress died I started playing as heir. Again my main heir was in some other court because he was already married. He had bad traits and was all in all a bad heir choice. Luckily I had 3 other sons that were in my court. Then a mirracle happened, my oldest son took the vows, joined some holy order and was out of succesion so I thought all my problems were solved now, since the second son I had is the best choice. But of course I was wrong. Now my second son is heir to only byzantine empire, all my other empires (around 10 of them) go to my grandson (son of my first son). I hope this is not confusing.

So I thought the reason for this weird succession is because my second son had no sons of his own. But even when he got one, nothing changed. This time around there are no "born in the purple" traits to mess something up, so of course I am extra confused as to why this is happening. If someone could please help me here I would be really grateful, I don't want to assasinate my own grandson.

Started the game in 867 as a mere Patrician of Amalfi. Built a trade post and have a son as my heir. I was in position to be elected Doge when the current one dies. However, as soon as the Doge died the game was over. Why does being elected Doge kill the game? I was Republican and all.
Ok, a thread on Steam suggests that the current Doge had a feudal heir and that the Republic died with him. Could it be that? So is there no way of keeping Amalfi a republic upon the death of the first Doge after 867?

Has nobody an answer? To ask in a more general context: Is it viable to start the game as a patrician in any republic with the aim to get elected Doge and continue the game?

Yes its fine to start as a patrician, even preferable infact. Sounds like either the Ai did something wonky which you havent given us enough details to know or it was a simple bug in your last attempt

Playing my first republic game in awhile so I am a little rusty about the rules. I built a trade post in Salerno then DOWed for one of the cities there. The duke died a few years later so the truce ended. So now I am trying to capture the rest of the county, but when I go to DOW him it says I have no CB. Anyone have any ideas why not?

Are you a patrician or doge? If you are Doge, you should have the CB. But if you are a patrician and that city belongs to another family, you do not have the CB.

I was a doge, but apparently it was distance based or something. Once I took Salerno it gave me the CB. I just don't remember distance being part of the rules.

Ironically it became part of the rules not long after the republic was introduced. Sadly there's no UI to tell you what is going on, its just trial and error.

Do West African pagans not get the pagan attrition bonus to their lands by design? 80% defensive bonus is nice but apparently the Ummayads have no problem marching a 15k stack around deep into desert pagan lands. Seems slightly broken when pagan lands are downright deadly in europe, despite being plains and grasslands.

I've set my kingdom to be primogeniture (which is not an issue), however I am having the issue where I am a king of 3 separate countries (Ireland, Scotland and Wales), and I will lose the titles of 2 of them (Scotland and Wales) when I die. How do I prevent this?

And how am I able to give a landed title to my children and heirs without losing the land with them becoming their own territory.

You're probably still running gavelkind for the other kingdoms. Each kingdom has its own inheritance laws and you will need to change those first. In cases involving kingdoms not running gavelkind (eg, one is on ultimo vs primogeniture) you can easily switch the laws by destroying and re-creating the title.

Remember, created titles will always have the same laws as your current primary title. Destroying and re-creating carries a hefty opinion penalty, but it's a failsafe way of changing laws if your vassals are preventing you from doing so. If any titles run gavelkind then destroying titles is not allowed though.

Whenever you hand out land the recipient will never become independent unless you are handing out a title to them of equal rank to yours. In your current situation, you would have to be an Emperor (Emperor of Britannia in this case) and only then would you not need to fear those titles becoming independent realms. So, if you create the Empire now, it will have Primogeniture as it's succession law and whatever current crown authority you have.

It's best not to land your heir though... the AI will start making dumb decisions. Even without them being landless, I once became my heir and saw that he had an active plot to kill some random kinsman. My heir was in risk of becoming a kinslayer simply to kill some random unimportant landless 'rival' kinsman of his. The chance for them to do dumb stuff is increased ten fold when landed. My heir's wife once died and he married a 30 something year old mastermind theologian dwarf...

If there was a thank you button, I'd press it.

I'm a convert from EU3 and EU4 to CK2 :D

Just to clarify, now I have the "King of Ireland, King of Scotland, King of Wales" titles, I should be able to form an Empire right? If so, is there a reason I can't see the decision?

That would be a no. I own all of Ireland, all of Scotland, all of Wales, and currently, a large chunk of Wessex and a few holdings from Jorvik. Cornwall is next on my list as it is a 4 province kingdom, which has no allies (I have claims on every province thanks to marriages).

But that would explain why I see no empire decision.

A small tip, you can check how many more counties you need by clicking your title on your character screen and then ticking the 'De Jure' box. Click on the Empire shield that appears and hover over create. It'll tell you exactly what you need to create it.

Um... what? Why can he do that?
(and no, that border gore with Pommerania is not my fault, first I lost Ruthenia to Gavelkind and then it inherited a very messy Lesser Poland)
