Is it that the town is part of a different realm than the county itself?

Yep, and my guess is that this behavior is not intentional, but rather a side effect of the fact that you are made temporarily hostile to the holder of a county your raiders land in, but not hostile to everyone. That flag doesn't trigger on the second holding (and in most cases it doesn't matter because the second is the same as the first) and so it gets skipped and you pillage the next holding.

Try this: Next time, step into Amalfi first, you'll certainly start raiding them (Republics definitely are NOT immune). Step back to this place and siege down the first castle. Are you now attacking the city?

So what would happen to a hypothetical duchy if it swore allegiance to say the Byzantine Empire? Would it become a republic with all that entails? Or would little change?

Why would it become a Republic? Republics aren't defined by who you are in vassalage to. They're defined by being a Duke-or-higher mayor with a coastal capital. A hypothetical duchy that swore to the Byzantines would become just that, a duchy under the Byzantine Empire.

Pagans are only allowed one wife, but they can have concubines, which are distinct from wives.

Ah yes, that's right. But isn't the only major difference the fact that children born to a concubine get a slight diplomacy hit? Other than that I don't really remember experiencing anything that different from the Christian marriages when playing as a Tengrist or Finnish pagan.

Ok, now I'm confused. I started a game as the duke of Poitou and Aquitaine in 867, vassal of West Francia. I ended up firing a successful faction for elective succession after the king decided to attack Lotharingia and lost his entire army. All the dukes actually start voting for me, but.. for some reason I can't vote at all, and it still lists Charles' son, the king of Aquitaine, as his heir. On the laws of West Francia tab, it shows my character with all the votes, and the nominate button is simply not there. What's going on here?

You are not a de-jure vassal of West Francia, so you get no vote in West Francian elections. You can be elected, though.

Don't know about the voting, i have a suspicion regarding your dejure status of the capital and thus voting right , but thats it.

Regarding the inheritance, hover your mouse over the french COA and it will show who inherits that.
The face displayed might still show the characters son, as he will inherit the other titles depending on their inheritance law status.

edit: Ah right, as tamius just said, neither Aquitaine (obviously), nor Poitou is dejure West-Francia.

It was broken in a recent patch. That patch may well have been 2.0.4. Edit: After consulting ckiiwiki the Legitimise Bastard decision must have been broken in 2.0.4, as it was fixed in the next patch, 2.1. There's not much you can do, since patching to 2.1 will break your save; are you happy with editing your savegame?

I think that's still broken as I typically have a few bastards running around and I haven't had the decision to legitimize them in many, many versions of patches.

Quick liege/succession question: [I couldn't find the thread at first at asked my question in a new one. my apologies to everybody!]

I'm the independent Duke of Upper Burgundy (my father fought hard to gain our independence from Lotharingia).
My eldest son is already the Duke of Provence, a title he inherited through his mother. Provence is not independent, and as the Duke of Provence the King of Lotharingia is my son's liege.

So, assuming he is my heir when I die, what will happen? Will he become independent when he inherits Upper Burgundy or will the family land become reincorporated into Lotharingia given that my son is already the king's vassal? (I'm afraid I might know the answer to this...)

Right now I just have one other son by the same wife (who is the eldest son's heir; they're still children).

Right now I just have one other son by the same wife (who is the eldest son's heir; they're still children).

The fundamental rule is: If your PRIMARY TITLE is changed by an inheritance, your STATUS changes to be that of your new primary title. If your PRIMARY TITLE does not change by inheritance, your status stays the same.

Your primary title will only change during an inheritance of a HIGHER title. So if your son was a count, inheriting an independent Ducal title would make him independent. Since your son is a Duke, he needs to inherit a King or higher title to change his primary title and thus his status.

Bottom line: Your son will stay a vassal.

OK, so I can not add expansions sequentially because some content is in patches, at least I think that is what the responder indicated. So which
expansions do I need to buy to bring the game to its current state? Remember, I purchased the just basic game from Steam. And thanks for the
quick response to my original question. It was much appreciated.

It appears you've misunderstood Tom013. He was trying to say that there is no point buying expansions sequentially, because if you bought, say, all the expansions released before this time last year, you wouldn't be playing the game as it was a year ago, as there have been a lot of patches since that changed the game radically (especially patch 2.1).

If you want the game in its current state, buy whichever expansions you like, in whatever order you like. Have a look and see which you think you'd enjoy. If you want all of them, then buy all of them; the order doesn't matter.

No, you can buy whatever expansions you want and the game will still be in the same state it is for everyone else but you'll just have certain content blocked. You can't play Muslims without Sword of Islam, The Republic lets you play coastal republics, Legacy of Rome gives you some Byzantine-specific events and decisions as well as retinues for everyone, The Old Gods lets you play as Pagans and Zoroastrians, Sons of Abraham is necessary to play Jews and have the College of Cardinal and certain events, Rajas of India lets you play as the Indians and gives them their own portraits, etc.

Right, these are the things. I'd say get started without any expansions and just see what interests you after that. To add a little bit to Sovereign's list:
I'd say if you're playing in the Christian west, the most important to a complete experience are provided by Sons of Abraham with Legacy of Rome secondary. If you're playing Orthodox Christian, you absolutely need Legacy of Rome but Sons of Abraham still adds a few things. The Old Gods also adds the earlier start date (867) so if you like seeing the world burn (867 typically leads to a really different history), that's worth a shot as well.

Does anyone know why my allies in a Jihad decided to attack my troops? I joined in the Sunni Caliph's war for Jerusalem and sent a party of troops over to the province where the nearest allied troops (the ones marked with blue) were. As soon as my soldiers arrived there, the "allies" began attacking them and completely wiped them out. I can't figure out what went wrong. Is there something I'm missing with the Jihad mechanic?

Something I thought about while on a smokebreak, but don't know if I've understood it right: are crusades called only if I hold the title? There's a wiki here that seems to indicate such: http://www.ckiiwiki.com/Crusades,_jihads_and_great_holy_wars

I have a Gotland Ironman game where I have managed to conquer quite a lot now - my plan to secure Sweden for myself failed, but I did get the Finnish and Norwegian titles, and then went on a norse stampede through the british isles after reforming the norse faith. Problem however is that at this time, the catholics just finished a 15 year long crusade in Andalucia, and the Teutons got that territory. According to that list, my english and irish titles will be the next target, and I am not in a situation to stand against Teutons that hold most of Iberia as well as Hungary.

So: is it right that crusades are called only on titles, meaning that I can escape the wrath of the pope through destroying my Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Ireland titles, allowing things to drift into f.ex. Norway instead?

No, they're often called for titles that don't exist. For the first year at least of the game being out, the first crusade from a 1066 start was called on Jerusalem, which never had a holder.

No, it isn't, for two reasons:

1. As I've mentioned, the pope can call a crusade for k_england even if it doesn't have a holder.
2. The pope will call a crusade every 30 years, which wouldn't leave enough time for it to drift into Norway, anyway.

Ah, okey. That makes sense. (And avoids the "risk" of gaming the crusade system.) Good point about the kingdom of Jerusalem as well.

One followup question: with a crusade every 30 years - does that count from the end of the previous crusade, or the start of it? Since it was such a long crusade, that does make a bit of difference in how much time I have available to prepare myself. And prepare myself I will have to do... Will get interesting to try to hold on to my british lands.

From the end.

Best of luck!
