Hi.
I recently bought the game and I really enjoying it.
I began with Wessex recently and became King of England a few years later. Until here, no problem.
But... The Pope launched a crusade against West Francia ( I m in 965) because the ruler became cathar. I join the crusade, and finally, I have a score of 40% at the end. Yes but, I don't receive the targeted lands...
It's the duke of Nantes (with only 12%) who received them. So, ok, I quit, I reload (yes, it's my first crusade), I kill the duke of Nantes and... it's now Wales who received West Francia (it was not member of the crusade!)...

I don't understand... Are there any situations where the "winner" of the crusade doesn't receive the targeted lands? I searched and found nothing about that... Maybe claims of other rulers are involved in this situation?

EDIT : I see there is uncertainty about war score during crusade. I forgot to mention it, but I besieged 4 counties and made only one battle... Some people say battles are more important, other besiege.

I believe that if there is a good Catholic claimant (or, if he sits the throne currently) then he will get the lands. This is probably the case, since West Francia probably has four dozen Karlings and others that are Catholic with claims. If it's not, well... Otherwise, it goes not to who has the highest "war score" but who made the largest "contribution" -- this is shown if you hover over the Crusade flag on the left, under your character's portrait. Sometimes the largest "contribution" is the guy who sent 3000 troops to their doom at the start of the war.

Are there any situations where the "winner" of the crusade doesn't receive the targeted lands?
The top contributor to a Crusade ONLY gets the lands if there is no existing Christian claimant. Typically, this means only lands like Jerusalem or Andalusia would end up yours as a top contributor. Very rarely does a realm like France or Italy have no proper claimants.

Quick Question, I started out as Castile in the 1066 Start. My ruler now holds the Kingdoms of Castile, Leon, and Galicia. I switched my primary title to the Kingdom of Leon as they had Elective Monarchy and High Crown Authority. My other two kingdoms are Gavelkind succession with Medium Crown Authority. I ended up having 4 sons and 1 daughter (which I know is bad). Is the only way to keep my lands to kill my other sons and/or give them bishoprics?

If it is necessary, I guess I'll do it. However, this kills the roleplay aspect for me, as none of my children are very bad. Thanks for any answers.

After ten years, you should be able to switch Castile and Galicia to elective too. Before then? ...You already know your other choices.

Hi.
I'm wondering, how people get huge new kingdoms into their empires with inheritance? Cause if I am trying to marry someone's heir in my favor it always say something like 'too high in succession line'. The only way to subjugate christian kingdoms into my mighty wendish empire seem to be landing someone and pressing their claim (or using duchy claims).
Also usually when I land someone with a claim on whole kingdom or empire - I don't get this casus belly somehow (I don't have the press claim for this in declare war list) - what I'm doing wrong?
You could better marry the queen (previously having eliminated unnecessary husband and heirs), and your common heir would get both titles, just be aware of inheritance rule. You can marry somebody not "too high in succession line" and kill other pretenders. Anyway, you have to kill a lot af people, so you need high intrigue, a lot of money & good luck.
A more simple way (for a reformed pagan) is to send raiders into infidel land, loot and occupy holdings within desired territory, then take them back to your land, declare holy war & win it instantly. I have collected 3 empires in this way.

When inprisoning someone, supposing you don't have another reason to inprison them, is there any reason that you shouldn't let them out as soon as possible? What I'm really asking are there any modifiers that change depending on the duration of imprisonment? Will the prisoner hate you more the longer they're in prison, for instance. I've seen cases where the prisoner has had a positiver value towards me, which was unexpected.

They can't plot against you or associate with factions against you while they're in prison. Therefore, if I have a troublesome vassal in my prison, he stays there for the rest of his life.

Ok, let's the prisoner wasn't troublesome. The only thing I can't think of was when a couple eloped without my consent. I had to jail them to avoid a prestige hit. Are there opinion penalties or bonuses to having them in there for a while?

What I'm really asking are there any modifiers that change depending on the duration of imprisonment? Will the prisoner hate you more the longer they're in prison, for instance. I've seen cases where the prisoner has had a positiver value towards me, which was unexpected.

To add to what tamius23 said: They also can't have children -- if the current inheritance situation is favorable to you, that's good but it can be a negative as well. They also cannot resist you if you choose to revoke their titles while they are in prison, and if anyone tries to push their claim on a title you hold, you can execute them to force the war to end. They will not hate you more the longer they are in prison but their opinion may not be as positive once they get on the outside.

I'm wondering about paying for new settlements and upgrading current ones. What's the most advantagous thing to do? Build new holdings, or upgrade current ones? How should I best spend my money?

Also when I'm educating children, should I just use a teacher that has the most stats across the board, or are some of them more beneficial?

A lot of people like to build as many cities as possible and hive them off to mayors for them to upgrade. But for a new player, it makes a very small difference. Try some different strategies and see how it goes.

Also when I'm educating children, should I just use a teacher that has the most stats across the board, or are some of them more beneficial?

Some are more beneficial than others.

Diplomacy - increases relations with people
Martial - strengthens your troops in battle
Stewardship - allows you to hold more land in your demesne
Intrigue - … helps when plotting
Learning - helps you gain technology points more quickly

I tend to prioritise diplomacy. It'll help you have a smoother transition. Be aware that tutors will pass on traits, and if you pick a tutor who is mad, he will probably make your heir turn out odd.

There's a lot of debate on when, where, and how to upgrade holdings and build new ones, and you should probably look for threads that discuss that on its own. Most folks agree that the #1 use of gold is (in the early game) to buy mercenaries to seize new territory and defend yourself from stronger adversaries. Beyond that, there's a lot of debate on holdings.

As for educating heirs, the answer is almost always "EDUCATE THEM YOURSELF" (at least until right before they hit age of majority, when you should send them off to finish their education with someone with your desired final education trait like Grey Eminence if you want diplomacy). I think the consensus is that this is a good idea for both your primary and secondary heir. As for which stats are best, it depends on where in the game you are. If you start small, martial is likely very important to you because your martial stat boosts your own demesne's levies. Later, when you have lots of vassals to keep happy, a lot of folks favor diplomacy since a high diplomacy stat can mean more happy vassals from day 1 of your reign.

I just purchased Crusader Kings II from Steam and would like to add and play the expansions in the order they were released. Is there someplace where a list of the expansions which gives the order in which they were released?

I am trying to lower my levies and I keep getting a message that due to enemy presence in our homelands that only x of y troops will be able to return home. How do I determine what "enemy presence" this is referring to? I have no active wars and no armies in my country that show as a red enemy. I don't want to lose levies because of an invisible enemy. What is this referring to?

I just purchased Crusader Kings II from Steam and would like to add and play the expansions in the order they were released. Is there someplace where a list of the expansions which gives the order in which they were released?

For the record, you can't really play the expansions in the order they were released, or at least you cannot play the game as it was before the expansions were released -- a lot of the patches along the way brought the content along for free... only a limited subset of the content is actually tied to the expansions themselves.

Rebels? Occupied lands? Wars of your liege (and so your liege's enemies)? Or are you NOT in your own homelands?

Thought of one other... Do you have vassals that have occupied each other? Otherwise, I don't know -- save and reload and try again? I've not heard of this issue before.

I'll try that. Some vassals just rebelled. Maybe by the time I crush their insolence and put their heads upon pikes it will have worked itself out.
