o_O There're far better combos for when your cultural retinue sucks than spamming HI. Defensive and Skirmish for instance.

Defensive on its own is a pretty good retinue for stacking. It's not got a particularly high cost, the archers slaughter your opponents in the skirmish phase and the pikes prevent you suffering major damage in the melee (with the right-cultured generals, they can deal absolutely horrifying damage as well, and they even give fairly good damage with generic tactics). Then it's also good at siege-assaulting due to being composed of 40% Archers.

Likewise it's good when combined with Cataphracts (although some might just prefer pure Cataphracts). If you have your Defence retinue in one flank and your Cataphracts in another, then the Defense retinue lies about its name by brutally smashing your enemies to pulp in both the Skirmish and Melee phases, while the Cataphracts (who will likewise have performed decently in the Skirmish phase and very well in the Melee) then merrily slaughter the shattered weeping routing elements of your enemies in the Pursuit phase. The presence of 20% Archers in your army also means that siege-assaulting isn't much bother.

My character is Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, his wife is the heir to the throne of England. If I orchestrate the murder of the English king, will England then become part of the Byzantine Empire?

Nope. Just she will become queen and your probably common heir might inherit both, depending on Crown and Inheritance law and regarding ERE, the "born in purple/despot" issue.

Hmm, I guess if there is the chance the kido will get both, then I think I shall give it a shot.

Yeah, unless she raises CA to high or you do or somesuch. Even the AI manages it sometimes to unite huge realms. Sometimes.

If you're talking about the King of France holding the least amount of land in what is modern-day France, then you probably won't go wrong by choosing Philip II as he begins his reign in 1180/81. England's reach into French lands is at its height here and it is Philip himself who later smashed John of England, earning himself the nickname "Augustus" , and shaming John as "Lackland" and "Softsword". But at 1181, Philip II is scarely a man yet (historically, he's 16 at this point).

For child rulers, Ol' Willy's former liege Philip I is a boy king at both Stamford Bridge and The Conqueror bookmarks. However, with Stamford Bridge, William can lose the war and remain a vassal under Philip, who needs to be placated as vassals go.

If the Bastard wins the war though, you get strong claims on everything he takes with him. That start is kinda easy, the first idea was awesome though, gonna have to try it myself ^_^

Indeed, with all the tweaks, Willy is often left utterly exhausted after the Conquest. As long as you pacified the vassals sufficiently, "Press all Claims" becomes very welcome. Had a fun HIP game as Philip I. Being "king" (read: emperor) of France was totally awesome, thanks to HIP.

How does "designate heir" work for Jains and Buddhists? I have Primogeniture and I am Jainist. There is a button for that, obviously, on the upper right of the portrait. However, when I press it, it just disappears and the blood drop (for close dynasty) appears. I did this for my second son, whom I want to be my heir. Apparently, nothing changes, my heir is still my first son. Is it bugged? Both of my sons are Hindus, does it matter?

What is supposed to happen is that where the blood drop usually is, there'll instead be a small crown, more dull and a bit smaller than the heir crown. When you click it, it's supposed to turn into the heir crown, and the religion of the sons should not be a factor.

Screens?

I played for several hours but I'm not finding this as particularly fun. Was very happy with one of my rulers. He had 5 children. The oldest daugher was married off, but died of illness at 18. The oldest son, who had a lot of potential, also died of illness around 18. The same with my the youngest daughter and son. The middle child, who really wasn't that spectacular, continued to rule, but died in a suspicious accident. His son died in a Great Hunt, but I saved beforehand, so now he's has the Craven trait. He also eventually died young. I'm in my current generation, and it just seems like a successive stream of bad events. I'm pretty sure some NPC ruler is targetting my line, but if I take care of them, isn't some other rival just going to target them.

Anyway, are there any highly recommended mods for this game.

Gavelkind question:

Playing as a King with ac-primo, married to a queen (not matrilinealy) with ac-gavelkind.

Our only son was heir to both kingdoms.

After a tragic accident, my wife passed her title to said son. *snicker*

When my son died of prolonged sickness (I really didn't have a hand in that one, just before anyone asks) he passed his kingdom to some random cousin of mine (a duchess in his kingdom) who was of neither of the two dynasties involved.

??????

I'm very confused.

Yes, there was a small crown which I pressed but the thing was that only the blood drop appeared and the crown vanished. But it seems that the person becoming the actual heir took a little while when I unpaused. Some time later, he became my heir, the blood drop had changed to a normal crown which marks the person as the heir. It just took a little time. But thanks for the answer!

A new question: Are the Seljuks and the Ghaznavids bugged at the moment? It's 1030s now, and neither of them has appeared. There are Turks there in the game but they are all Tengri. Ghazna is Persian and Sunni and ruled by Persian Sunnis. I searced for both of them but neither has appeared. Can they still appear, I thought the Seljuks are supposed to appear around 1000?

So I'm currently the Sunni badshah of Hispania, and I've expanded into north Africa up to the Fatimid's borders. The Fatimid's, of course, are Shia (their ruler is the Shia caliph in fact, having expanded quite a bit in the middle east) However I don't have any ability to declare holy wars on them. Are there any special circumstances where Sunni and Shia rulers sharing borders and all that can't holy war each other? I know I had the option to earlier, before I launched a big invasion of Italy, but now the option is gone.

Are you sure he didn't change the laws to elective in the interim? Or give up to a faction right before he died?

I'm assuming the obvious question of whether he's actually a bastard masquerading as your son has already been answered...

Good to see it resolved! :)

THey're not bugged, but the way they appear opens some strange possibilities, like this.

Since they first appear as Coutiers, they can have accidents, have "accidents", get sick, depressed, whatever.

Is there some kind of mechanism preventing the AI from accepting defeat even with a negative 100% warscore? AI Byzantium has been fighting a "lowered crown laws" war and has been sitting on 100% positive warscore for 12 years. In the meanwhile it's been devastated by invasions and lost Anatolia, Sicily and Lukania to the muslims.
