Regarding education: did the last patch reduce the rate at which Wards gain traits? Cause I keep having my heirs be totally bland at age 10 or up and they might have 2 traits (not counting education) by the time they are 16. Its not universal across all the kids in the game but its happening far more than it used to. Could just be awful luck though.

I'm planning on starting a game in 867 as the Piasts today, and I've got three ideas in my head but I'm not sure which one to go with:
1) Reform the Slavic Faith and proceed to roflstomp Eastern and Central Europe for the glory of Perun.
2) Convert to Catharism (probably via Catholicism) and mercilessly spread gender equality across the lands east of the Elbe while trying to avoid big scary crusades.
3) Convert to Orthodox (because yep, an Orthodox Poland, that's historical) and then try and convert the men of Rus' to follow the One True Faith, by force if necessary.

What would you guys recommend?

The Slavic faith is pretty plain compared to your other two options. If you've already reformed Romuva or one of the other eastern European religions, you pretty much know how that game goes already. Going through Catholicism to its most distinguished heresy gives you lots of options. That sounds most interesting to me, but #3 ain't bad either. You could also convert to an Orthodox heresies if it got dull (like bogolimist for the lady priests) or, for something even more bizarre, try to bring Nestorian (or its favored heresy, Messalian) to Europe.

Yeah, having reformed Suomenusko before I gathered that the non-Norse pagans might be lacking any non-Norse flavour of any significance beyond 1 feast.

Catharism it is, then!

Im playing as a suomenusko(not reformed) leader and I rule as king of Suomi at the moment. I want to convert my country to catholism, so how can I get my ruler to convert?

Are you zealous? If no, then there are a lot of ways (listed from least effort/luck to most effort/luck):

  1. Get holy warred/crusaded by Catholics. Convert by decision in a cynical attempt to keep the invaders out.
  2. Capture a Catholic woman to make a concubine or wife. Convert by decision as you listen to her whisperings of Jesus's forgiveness as you fall to sleep.
  3. Bring a Catholic in to your realm (easiest way? conquer a nearby county owned by a Catholic lord). Have your children educated by him or his courtiers. They may learn the truth of Jesus!
  4. Accept a Catholic missionary from a foreign land in to your realm. Convert by event as he continues his tireless work to save you from your old, heathen ways.
  5. Bring a high-learning Catholic into your realm. Get into a theological debate with him by event and "lose" the debate. His intellect shall convince you!

If you are zealous, the answer is "try to make your heir NOT zealous and then try these once you die."

Is there a way to split your ships? For example, if I have 500 men, but 20 ships, I would rather only raise 5 ships to reduce the upkeep. Is this possible?

It depends, ships act just like normal levies in that each fleet will be made of ships from 1 or more holding. Fleets from more than one holding can be broken down into smaller parts using the create new... button. If all of your ships are from a single holding then no, you can't break them down into smaller chunks.

You can split ships just like troops by each holding unit. So if you got a unit from a holding that has 5 ships, then sure.

1) I believe some events and many ai actions look at that number but I could be wrong

2) If you aren't one of the two war leaders then no, there's no way to get out of a war you get dragged into. If you are the war leader the ai will usually accept any offer you make to surrender.

So, to effectively use this CB, you tend to go and siege everything so you get everything as a result and then can give it out to new vassals as you see fit. However, it is difficult to get the pope to give you this CB.

This is the Catholic Invasion CB. In addition to what Icebeast said, I believe it also requires either your realm to be smaller than theirs or you to have a legitimate claim on the crown. If you're asking about that, Pilot00, great, but there are a number of Invasion CBs. All of them target kingdoms, but there are various differences beyond that. Here we go:

  1. Orthodox ones work almost exactly the same except that they require that both rulers answer to the same Patriarch in addition to being Orthodox. Miaphysite, restored Jewish, and restored Zoroastrian rulers can also use it in the same way, but since they require your target to be the same religion, practically speaking, you'll never get the chance.
  2. Tribal Invasions are a culturally-tied CB available only to Altaic (basically the 867 game start Tengri cultures) and Aztec. It is similar to the Christian one as well, but requires no permission and you can take EVERY holding you siege (even ones not a part of the war goal -- it's really an exceptional CB).
  3. Prepared Invasions are a Norse-religion-restricted CB where you pre-declare your intention to invade, and event troops start showing up to join your invasion. You have to declare within two years and you can only do this once in a lifetime. It has restrictions on your total realm's size and your opponent's size (10-40 holdings) and requires 1000 prestige. Enemies will react to these wars like they were holy wars. You usurp all occupied holdings like in the Christian and Tribal cases.
  4. Muslim Invasions are targeted at DIFFERENT religion lands, require 1000 piety, and a border with the enemy. Unlike the Christian variety, you don't seize individual titles -- rather, you subjugate the existing lords. They keep their land and you get a "subjugated" +75 opinion bonus. The only land you get directly will be land held by the overlord (assuming he has territory to flee to outside of what your'e taking) or territory held by rulers that have territory outside of the target kingdom.
