Now that I think of it, I've seen the Eastern Roman Empire convert to Catholicism a couple of times. What happens to the The Ecumenical Patriarch in those cases?

He stays as an Orthodox vassal of the Empire.

A very annoyed one, but a vassal nonetheless. You can't convert religious heads, so he stays there, AFAIK.

I started as a Cathar Countess in Persia, and im having big amounts of trouble converting provinces, the chance is like 1%, which is frustrating, i even cheated and gave my Priestess like 100 learning but it didnt seem to affect conversion rate.

What can i do to boost the chance it has to convert the province?

Are event raised forces stronger than levies? On a par with retinues?

I don't think they're inherently stronger as units; I think the reason that troops like the Mongols and the Magyars tend to seem stronger is because they're chock-full of Horse Archers, which are generally absolutely devastating. Event troops in general have more cleanly-delineated troop compositions, whereas ordinary levies are just a ragbag mix of unit types unless you specifically focus on developing one type of castle building in your demesne.

I think. Don't quote me on that, though.

Quick question, in my Byzantine game my vassals keep infighting (not just revocation wars) despite medium crown authority. I do not have any kingdoms, vassalage is directly from empire to duchy (and the occasional county).

What could be the issue? Do I need the kingdoms as "de jure cloaks"? Version is the most recent non-beta Steam version.

No, I meant the sort of event troops rebelling vassals get. I keep getting defeated by them, despite flat country, better commanders and superior numbers. Hence the question.

Thanks, DW

I don't think they're supposed to be. Are you using 2.1.1, not 2.1.2.1? Apparently a lot of retinues use crappy tactics in 2.1.1, which means that those gosh durned event stacks (which I think are mostly light infantry and therefore should be easy to annihilate) aren't as easy to wipe out with a quality army as they should be.

If my memory is correct unless you absorbed all the duchies into one kingdom before creating the Empire title, the dejure kingdoms borders still exist. You can attack across dejure borders at Medium Crown authority. A duke in Anatolia would be prevented from attacking another Anatolian title, but Greece is still open season.

At least I think this is how it used to work a few DLCs ago. I have no idea how it has changed recently. edit - It could also be a revocation war with other Ducal allies jumping in.

Most recent patch before RoI, so it should be the one that eliminates bad tactics, yes. (Not getting RoI until the first hotfix is out of beta. ;-)) Might just be incredibly bad luck then.

Medium CA just stops actual war declarations for stuff like de jure issues and claims. All the faction wars and triggered revolts for refusing demands are still fair game.

Two questions on already being a Holy Roman Emperor:

1. Is it a good idea to marry off my children and relatives to all of my vassals?
2. What's a better way to acquire France? Through conquest or marriage?

Two questions on already being a Holy Roman Emperor:

1. Is it a good idea to marry off my children and relatives to all of my vassals?
2. What's a better way to acquire France? Through conquest or marriage?

  1. A resounding "maybe?" Relatives at a certain distance give you no alliance and no marriage ties boon, so there's really nothing in it for you to do that. Also, not much to lose if they have no claims anyway. If they're male dynasts of yours, there is the chance that their children may end up in line for your vassal's title which is good for your dynastic prestige (and always fun for roleplay). As for your children, you have to be even more careful. Your children will get claims and will pass them on to their children. That means in the long run, you may have claimant vassals that are annoyed with you. In the short term, the marriage ties opinion boon might help keep the current lord quiet. And again, there's always the chance that your dynasty inherits their title.
  2. The EASIEST way is to get a claimant to the French throne, land him, and then push his claim for the kingdom. You then get the whole kingdom in a single go. In my opinion, that's sort of gamey and not a lot of fun, but it's definitely optimal. The slightly less gamey and almost as effective way is to marry your dynasty in to a claim and then push your dynast's inherited claim. Basically same result. Finally, marrying a French princess will give your heir a weak claim on inheritance that you could push against a child-king. That's probably the most logical path that's also not reliant on lots of assassination or gamey claimant dealings. It also gives YOU the kingdom title, so you don't have to worry about future French king-vassals hating the hell out of you.
