Creating an antipope after you've been excommunicated is pointless, right? I don't play Catholics that often.
Well, it gets harder to make an antipope (since you need to have a vassal bishop who likes you more than the pope in a kingdom with free-investiture), but making an antipope should either remove the excommunication or make it trivial to get it lifted. I don't think I have ever gotten excommunicated as a catholic, so I haven't ever actually tried.

What is the point of an antipope? And what is the easiest start date to restore the Roman Empire as the Byzantines?
You can use your antipope to press his claim and become the new 'true' pope. If you are at a empire-rank this will make the pope your vassal. He will then receive all of christianities tax and give you a hughe part of this as tax to you.
As for byzantium I believe the further back you go with the start Date the bigger the byzantine Empirie is at Start of the game.

1 Having your own Anti-pope gives you all of the usual Pope actions any time you want them - divorce, excommunication, sanctioned invasion, free money, the works. It really is a bit OP, but do be warned that the "real" Pope and all of his favorites will move heaven and earth to destroy your pretender.

2 I have never tried but I understand that 869 is a very strong start for the Byzzies.

if an independent ruler does not have a dynastic heir, one of their vassals will inherit, how the game calculates which vassal inherit?

IIRC it chooses the most powerful ruler based on internal factors (presumably max levy and income), if the target has no vassals at all then it picks the most capable Councilor.

I've never played an anti-pope game. You choose your first anti-pope, is that right? Are his successors chosen through papal election? Meaning does your anti-pope have his own cardinals and conclave separate from Rome's?

TBH I've never played with an Anti-pope either although I did once play as a multi duke vassal of the HRE who had promoted his own AP. I found that I couldn't choose to follow the "real" pope but I could start and run a successful Nominate Anti-King faction who took over and abolished the pretender pope.

I would guess that they would have their own College of Cardinals as each character in a split realm as the tag "Religious Head =" and either the Pope in Rome or Pope in <elsewhere>.

You could either tray starting as the HR emperor in one of the 11th century starts or alternatively fire up a dummy game and create your own, again as HR emperor.

I tried yesterday. No cardinals, no papal succession, only investiture like Rockphed said. Once I found out how lame it was, I had to declare war on the pope then surrender to get rid of the anti-pope.

Ok, so I have a question that's likely been answered before in this 1300-page thread. Bearing that in mind, however, I do want to know the answer (and the search function produced results that weren't very helpful, as mine is a very basic [read: dumb] question). So, if I'm in the console, how do I actually play anther character? Say I wanted to play the King of Sardinia and Corsica in the Rise of the Hansa start, whose ID is 71171. I tried entering play71171, and it says that that's an unknown command. How exactly do you console-switch to a different character?
Follow-up question: can I console-switch to a character that's unplayable in the base game (like Pagans or Muslims, I know Holy Orders are playable with console commands)?
All help is appreciated.
Thanks much!

I've had a few epidemics of the Aztec Disease recently, but I haven't seen anyone that got the disease in its entirety. From looking at people's charinfo I can see that many people have contracted it, but I've yet to see anyone get more than a single symptom from it. Is it broken?

I think I read somewhere that pagans can get bravery through the war focus but I've yet to see that happen. Is there a focus that gives pagans bravery?

War focus is great. Can give you bravery, brawny, remove cowardice, give you easy war games...

...and it's all absolutely random :( Just gotta be lucky and patient.

  1. What prevents male rulers from getting the Master Seducer trait? I've had female rulers get Master Seductress multiple times but it just never seems to appear with males. My current male ruler has probably more than 30 lovers, dozens of ex-lovers, over 20 acknowledged bastards (and countless denounced bastards), and numerous incestuous relations accumulated over a 40 year reign but hasn't gotten anything more than the Lustful and Elusive Shadow trait and the Tomcat modifier. [Playing as Basileus of Byz]
  2. Why does the game allow incest between siblings but not between parent and child (or grandchild)?
  3. Can Jewish courtiers ever be converted to your faith?
  4. What's the benefit of practicing a secret faith?
  5. I'm playing as Byzantium in ~800. I have the massive HRE in the northwest with an army 3x my size, spanning from central Spain to western Germania, and to the south I have a border with the even larger Abbasids who have an even larger army, spanning from Egypt to India. Neither will ally with me or even sign any pacts because of "political concerns". I want to expand my territory but no idea where I should go. Andalusians wont ally me because one of my vassals conquered some of their lands in Africa, nor will nearby African states ally because of overlapping claims in Africa. Only safe place for me to conquer are the Euroasian states which is troublesome because they are mostly nomadic and I cant afford to build holdings in each territory to prevent it from ceding upon succession, and more importantly, because they are the first to get fucked by the Mongol Horde. Any tips on what I should do?

1. The event that grants the Master Seducer trait is called WoL.99 and is found in the file /events/wol_seduction_events.txt. There does not seem to be anything in there that distinguishes between males and females, except the nicknames that are handed out upon gaining the trait. This is probably just bad luck but do keep an eye on it - sometimes a simple save and restart fixes these things.

2. I am not sure if this is limited or not. I have on occasion had my character seduce and marry his dead father's second wife (ie his stepmother), I haven't tried with a biological mother. Try playing Zoro, I hear that they are quite "liberal" in this regards !

3. I am not sure but I think that most randomly spawned (as opposed to new arrival) Jewish courtiers come with the "true_believer" modifier which makes them immune to conversion. Try getting a new arrival (not event spawned courtier) to become your bestest friend (ie +100 opinion of you) then ask him to convert, if he can't won't then it's probably hard coded.

4. All sorts of things !

First off, if you join the relevant secret society you get to see which of your courtiers and vassals are secretly practicing another religion.

Second, if you are looking to convert your kingdom then you can start said secret society yourself and then work to bring in converts who will then go out and do your conversion work for you. Once these conversions start to snowball and you reach critical mass you can then go public and have a very good chance of not being pubstomped/excommunicated/killed in a religious revolt. Don't ever join a secret religious society that has been started by someone else though unless you can take over pretty quick, otherwise you will be subject to the leader's decision as to when to go public which will almost certainly not be when you want it.

Third, practicing in secret gives you access to religious specific benefits without the hassle of actually converting. The best known example is playing as a Catholic Crusader or Orthodox Doux and secretly converting the Shia Islam, which gives you the ability to join the Assassins !

5. Build deep for now, looking to expand once one or the other of the two big blobs starts to fracture. Don't hesitate to take small bites out of each as and when they are distracted ,e either with decadence or succession revolts (Abbies) or internal faction revolts (HRE). Sometimes just staying alive is a win, at least until you have built up your levies, demesne and retinues to the point where you can kick serious ass in holy war or ducal claim wars.

Hi guys, just three questions:

1 How can I check if my current Ironman savegames is still ok or is corrupted?
2 About the Great Indian Sultanate achievement, do I need all the de jure duchies and so on, even the baronies?
3 I had started an iroman game, then I've purchased a DLC ( Sunset Invasion) and I've let
inadvertently it be installed. Is there a possibility that It has corrupted my ironman savegames?

Thank you!
