I dont think you have to use the powers to get your soul corrupted. Those events like songs of anguish and making mayhem on the countryside can cause soul corruption too, I believe.
I think they do as well. The most common reason I see suspicion rise and corruption events is due to the almost rampant use of the abilities.

I think if you take the "safe route" like NOT murdering the random pious family, you should be able to avoid the corruption events.

Question about artifacts in the Treasury. Is only one active at a time - the highlighted one?

Also, I captured a book in a siege which boosts learning, but lowers fertility by 20%. I don't have any other artifacts. Does this mean the effects of this book will always be active on my rulers unless I destroy it, or obtain a different artifact to focus on?

Some items are permanently active. Usually inconsequential stuff like the "saints finger bone".

Some items need a requirement to be met before they can be used, and if you don't meet them the item will be surrounded by a red box.

In your case, the book applies all of it's effects unless your character can't read it by having a low enough learning value. If you want to not experience it's effects, you can destroy it, OR give it away as a gift to someone.

For some reason, my vassal MR doesn't control some sea zones, despite having trade posts in every one of the counties bordering it.

This is particulary annoying on Italy and the Spanish Levant, since I control the D.of Latium (and Rome), and each county only gets one trade node, while, for example, in Constantinople (my capital) I haver 15 or so trade node. That's noticeable on the county total tax value, because again, Rome only has 600 or so (4 maxed out cities, Worship center, "Booming" and +1 node), while Constantinople is over 800 (4 maxed out cities, "Booming", +13 nodes).

As you can see, almost every county on the Mediterranean is controlled by Amalfian merchants (save for the ones in the SR, of course). I'd also want to know a way to remove Amalfi trade post on Brugge, so the Scottish traders on the Isle of Mann place one there, since most of Normandy and Britain has their posts.

How do you level up in the group then without partaking in these events? I did every single event that popped up, only to receive negative traits. And the ruler died in a short time before I even got past level 2/4.

Missions and traits, mostly. Traits which compliment the society are arguably the fastest way to rank up.

The reason for this is that sea zones are controlled based on which family controls the most nodes around the sea zone. IF you want increased connectivity, kill off all families except the current doge's until he has a single massive trade zone stretching the width and breadth of the Mediterranean. If done right, this will also allow the subservient families to create more trade posts. Just be sure that the Doge's heir is always also heir to the republic. Doges never give away their trade posts to help out a struggling rival family.

The reason should be that your republic doesn't have the majority of trade posts in these zones, but other republics do have trade posts there as well.

I want to pass a few laws, like late feudal administration and centralization, but my council members are all against me. If I would need to buy favors from them anyway to pass these laws, can I instead do it all in one go by buying favors and getting them to agree to abolish the council outright?

How do you attack the Hindu kingdoms when they all have a defense pact against you (one which you cannot sustain an attack against)?

Other enemies I attack by getting a non-agression treaty with by a bethrotal which i then break. This doesn't work with hindu enemies because they wont marry out of their cast. So how do i get a "breakable" non-aggression pact with them?

Any way to make your vassals move their capital around so their troops are closer to where the fighting is? In my Byzantine game, Italy has 20k troops, but his capital is in west Francia, so when I’m attacking the Mediterranean, a lot of my forces are too far away.

Don't think it's possible, you have to buy enough favors to have at least half the council to agree with you

Any way to make your vassals move their capital around so their troops are closer to where the fighting is? In my Byzantine game, Italy has 20k troops, but his capital is in west Francia, so when I’m attacking the Mediterranean, a lot of my forces are too far away.
You can raise their troops from anywhere in their realm, so you can raise troops from your italian vassal in Rome, if he or one of his vassal has it of course, without any problem

For the defensive pact, I think if you assassinate a ruler, there will be a brief window to attack the new ruler before they join the pact, and they can't join while at war.
Also, if you have Jade Dragon, the Chancellor's off-map ability increases the rate threat goes down.

What's Jade Dragon and off map ability?
Jade Dragon is a DLC which (basically) added China and a whole lot of Causus Belli.

"Off Map Ability" tends to refer to the default job a councilor does when not specifically assigned to a job. The Chancelor does the "preform statecraft" job for example.

I want to pass a few laws, like late feudal administration and centralization, but my council members are all against me. If I would need to buy favors from them anyway to pass these laws, can I instead do it all in one go by buying favors and getting them to agree to abolish the council outright?

You can, but there is a cooldown for proposing law changes, and it is twice as long when the council is abolished. Abolishing and not abolishing the council both have pros and cons, you have to decide what kind of realm you want to have.
