Okay, given your answers, I think that I'm gonna grab Chera Nadu and Delhi as main duchies, keeping the economic boon of Kerala and the Delhi as capital due historial significance. Too bad that Kannauj (Kanyakubja) doesn't even have a SR post, I kinda wanted to make a Harsha's Empire revival, but with such an useless capital, I think that isn't going to be possible.

Since I've 4 SR post available to grab, I think that I'm going to grab Debul, Cholamandalam, Goa and Laskmanavati.

@Atalvyr I think the theocratic duke would provide you with levies and taxes normally. Also note that since he's theocratic he can build castles, even though he'll only do so if he absolutely must (to fulfill the condition of having 1 castle, 1 city, and 1 temple in the province before being able to build anything else) and will normally prefer to build temples. His tribal vassals will also be able to feudalize as soon as they have a stone fort in their tribe, unless he's an unreformed pagan in which case they're stuck being tribal.

An important advantage of having a theocratic vassal is that you don't have to worry about succession shenanigans and he'll neatly keep whatever land you grant him. And while you can formally only have 10% of your land belonging to a theocratic vassal that limitation can be bypassed by transferring vassalage of counts.

Okay I’m the Emperor of Jerusalem but my vassals rule northern Germany. I’ve invited a claimant to the kingdom of Denmark to my court, married him matrilineally to my granddaughter and then granted him a City claim in Germany. So he is my vassal’s vassal. When I go to declare on Denmark my subvassal doesn’t show up. Why is that?
Thanks

City vassals, or Merchant Republics are bound by the same rules in that they can't press claim for any title above a County (or possibly a Duchy, I can't remember). If they aren't allowed to press for the claim, you as their liege are also prohibited from doing so as well.

I'm not sure if him being a vassal under another ruler is part of the issue. You could try retracting vassalage and seeing what happens, but I don't think that'll fix the issue.

Maybe his claim is weak?..
To elaborate (from WIKI):

A weak claim can only be pushed if:

  • the title holder is female and the claimant is male (except with Full Status of Women or gender equality game rule)
  • the title holder is in regency (due to imprisonment, incapability, youth, pilgrimage, or in hiding)
  • the title is currently contested in another war
  • or claimant is 2nd or 3rd in line to the title.

City vassals, or Merchant Republics are bound by the same rules in that they can't press claim for any title above a County (or possibly a Duchy, I can't remember). If they aren't allowed to press for the claim, you as their liege are also prohibited from doing so as well.

Where you found those rules? When this have been changed? I've pressed kingdom claims of my mayors and priests hundreds of times.

So it sounds like I should have given him a County or even a duchy before trying to press his claim. Does that sound right?

It's a rule of Republics that they aren't allowed to usurp a title greater than a Duchy. I don't remember when it's been changed, but it's been like that for an extremely long time. Note, the claim is for the KINGDOM of Denmark (at least that's what I read).
So it sounds like I should have given him a County or even a duchy before trying to press his claim. Does that sound right?
I'm not sure if it would've mattered.

I've had issues pressing claims for merchants before of a variety of tiers. So, I'm not sure what the deal is. As mentioned, if the claim is weak, you need to wait for the required prerequisites.

Haven't played the game in a while, admittedly.

The declaration would be to Usurp Denmark though.

Not the same...and it's a claim war.
Not sure where you get the idea that it's a "usurp declaration". There is no such named regular cb.

1. You can press claims of your vassal's vassal.
2. You can press claim if ruler is simple mayor of simple town
3. You cannot press WEAK claim if requirements not met

Screenshots of claimant, title and related stuff should be provided for further details, otherwise we will trample all kinds of assumptions. CKII is game of incredible details, just stating 'I cannot press some claim, why?' will not be enough.

I've always gone on the assumption that the "claim war" CB was similar to usurping a title. It's partially why you can't press a claim for a Kingdom while you are a patrician or Doge of a merchant republic.
