Declarations of war are always against the ultimate holder, not the title holder. The city may be run by a mayor, but that mayor is a vassal of someone else all the way up to the ultimate holder. From what you've said it seesm that the ultimate holder is the Byzantine Emperor. You COULD declare war on him for the city, but I would highly recommend against it !

That is not correct. If you are vassal you can declare war on another vassal in your realm if this is eligible by laws. Seems that Willianm is playing Amalfi - so he cannot just declare war on Byzantine

Thanks guys, I'm still learning the ropes, not only MR-wise, but for the game in general, I hadn't played it a lot before, and it was mostly back when the Viking expansion was released, so...

btw, my last eligible heir ended up surviving 15 years of constant plagues (do all plagues happen in Italy for some reason?), infirm condition, and being stung with needles in the eye in his sleep by his demon-possessed sister (literally)... to finally die at 16 due to an extra -3 health just when they found out he was actually "Incapable".

Game over. Lasted just 3 generations. Jeez, this game is pretty relentless. I've been G.O.-ed twice consecutively, within 70 years from the start since I've come back 2 days ago.

Suggest me a new start? I'm all ears. I'd like to make it through the whole game once, with EUIV-export intents, but I wanted a "modest" start.

do all plagues happen in Italy for some reason?

Plagues start in coastal areas or are at least more likely there, which is historically accurate. So Italy ends up diseased a lot. The devs also recognized that, but I don't know if there are any plans to tone it down. I'd hope so. I'd recommend turning epidemics to "fewer" there. Even then they are pretty frequent.

Try East Anglia in 769. They're small but badass. Mercia and Wessex next door are somewhat bigger and have wicked coats of arms.

Something unrelated and weird just happened. I was assassinated along with my oldest son and heir, unmarried. No worries, as I had 2 daughters and 2 younger sons, born of an affair with the Countess of Neapolis, and then fully legitimized, with the oldest currently being heir to the County.

However the game defaulted to the young one as my character. Not only that. I have "no heir of my dynasty" so it's game over if I die, despite having an older brother and 2 older sisters. How come?

(I'm just 3 and there's a consumption epidemic, so, lol)

Maybe I wake up a bit late but as it was previously said, MR succession law is, by default, based on a combination of age and prestige. Your second son had more prestige so he inherited.
But what I want to add is that as I remember it, as a patrician, you can designate your heir (in the minor titles tab). so it was possible to designate your first son as heir after all (even if the cost to to win the elections would have been higher... but if your concern is the survival of your dynasty, you don't care, don't throw any money in them, and just play as a healthy and fertile patrician).

Any German duke in 1066, vassal of the Holy Roman Empire. The might of the empire protects you from outside threats so you can focus all your attention on the internal matters of the HRE.

Alternatively try Matilda of Tuscany in 1066. She's the most powerful vassal in the Holy Roman Empire and starts out owning nearly half of Italy. Make sure you arrange a matrilineal marriage! Other than that the goal is to expand your territory and create the kingdom of Italy. Then you can try to become independent and to expand further until you can create the empire of Italia. Or you could try to get yourself elected to rule the Holy roman Empire instead of going for independence.

A third option would be to try Alfonso Jimena, king of Leon in 1066. If you assassinate your brothers you'll inherit their kingdoms and rule almost all Christian Iberia. Then you can push south and attempt to achieve early reconquista by waging holy wars on your Muslim neighbours. But beware that Gavelkind succession does not split your realm.

The claim city CB isn't usable against anyone within the same realm, only outsiders.

Thanks for the all starting suggestions. I ignored later dates since I wanted to use the 769 start for the first time.

I've started as the Count of Dyfed, western Wales, independent, made buddies with Mercia, got meself a 5 province petty kingdom in the Wales area using mostly de Jure claims and have married my way into the throne of Pictland (now "Kingdom of Alban").

So I've gone from count to king, from Welsh to Scottish and from feudal to tribal lol. It's 819, my mercian BFFs and I have rejected a Danish invasion already, and it seems a decent campaign is underway for now.

Hey, in my current campaign the vikings somehow succeeded at their other two invasions but failed to take East Anglia. Miracles happen!

Hospitals buy themselves don't do much. You need the upgrades and they are extremely expensive. Even then your capital county will still be affected, but you do notice that the disease takes long to get there and leaves earlier Especially when you also build hospitals in surrounding provinces. But that needs a boatload of gold. Nothing you can do when you're struggling with money and need to build up your castles.

Just found out you can't play as Holy Orders :O C'mon! They were a pretty big deal during the Crusades, and the word Crusader is in the title, FCS. Isn't that a bummer? Expect moar DLC to add playable orders?

No, you shouldn't expect it. Partly because you play as a dynasty, partly because they've not shown a lot of enthusiasm for playable theocracies of any sort, partly because they've said before that they regret "having Crusader in the title" and partly because there are only two to three DLC releases left.

FWIW you can console into a Holy Order and play from there. I did this a few years back then created my own custom Order, play is REALLY fun with lots of unique mechanics (no one can marry, succession is a crap shoot, no pretenders, no game over if no holdings left etc.

Give it a go some time - I highly recommend it

FWIW you can console into a Holy Order and play from there. I did this a few years back then created my own custom Order, play is REALLY fun with lots of unique mechanics (no one can marry, succession is a crap shoot, no pretenders, no game over if no holdings left etc.

Give it a go some time - I highly recommend it

There almost certainly could be a work around, but so far, every mechanic in the game is built in some sense around dynastic succession, and the weirdest ones (e.g. Republics, Hordes) the devs have expressed disappointment in (read the recent 5 year anniversary reflection) and the other weird ones (e.g. elective) have their own problems.
