Well I guess thats paradoxs usp (and they realise they need to keep it or they will get outmarketted by ea/activision). They stay true to their roots whilst alot of other gaming companies sell out (like by making their pc games console ports). I am glad they do because paradox is easily my favourite gaming company. Honestly I was so happy when I found these games existed. Thats probably why I own all their games and in fact I own quite a few of them twice. I just buy their games now on principle because they have earnt my trust and I want to support them. I think TW series has sold out for mass appeal. And in the process they please nobody. They might sell games by putting a ton of money into marketing rather than development but its a short term strategy imo. TW like you say is just gfx and battles now. The rest of it has gone backwards.

Idd.. its better to keep a niche and be praised for it than just become another mainstreamer for $. this however means that the community needs to support the company in order to secure more games.. they need $ to make games afterall, but well with the way they treat the community most pay with a smile :)
I have gone so far to actually not buy games thats pure ports from consoles.

But the community here make it even better, to state some examples, I can without doubt say that the most fun MP games I ever played (all games) was EU3 MP with alot of people, the community here is friendly, mature and they wanna interact and make a good expierence.. I can already see CK2 being massive when it comes to MP, I am looking forward to it.

The TW games might be mainstream, many of the mods made for them by one of the most dedicating modding communities to ever exist are not. If you were disappointed with the newer releases, head over the TW center forums and check out the some of the mods like DMUC for Empire or All in One for Napoelon. All the TW games have some pretty incredible mods that add challenge, depth, and historical realism.

Do you actually play them? Obviously everyone won't like them and you're entitled to your opinion, but I've found that a lot of negativity toward the TW games come from people who don't have computers powerful enough to run them. For anyone who has ever played with army men, toy knights, or built lego castles, the TW games make them all come to life in a way that people could have never even dreamed of 20 years ago. They're spectacular and without a doubt some of the best strategy games ever created.

I have played them all. Probably all of them since they started 10-15 years ago (or whenever). They have gone backwards. But its objective so obv its just my opinion. The hardware isnt an issue for me. I have never tried the mods though I accept.

Don't get me wrong, I still hold TW series in high regards, I just think they original games have been worse and worse since Rome, I also know they have alot of modders. I still play some of them MP (ETW IE) but online over stream, its original ver, I only use mods for SP (I must admit I don't play them SP anymore).
No matter how you twist it, the main focus of TW games are still the RT battles, thats what they sell it on to the mainstream pop.

All in all atm.

TW games = my fix for nice RT battles and lovely GFX (it really is lovely in some of them and yes I love seeing the battles play out)
PI games = Historic RTS/GS with depth (depending on what game, I play other reasons apply)

Thats to put it over simplified ofc.

Edit. I have run all TW games maxed out and yes I played since shogun.

Yet Europa Universalis II and III let you play any country in the globe (no idea what 1 did)

The name is kinda irrelevant. The game probably sells most in Europe and North America - crusader kings will sell more than Sultans on Jihad

I would buy a PI game named Sultans on Jihad! just saying... then agian, I most lilely would buy one called Lazy kings aswell, so I guess names are not that important yes.

Still the main focus of CK and now also CK2 is the European Lords. still, I would bet money on that we will see
1. Mod with proper features to allow Muslim rulers playable.
2. Same as above but a expansion/dlc.

Thanks for the quick answer. But it is big disappointment for me; medieval era game without ability to play islamic factions. I wish Paradox was not this much eurocentric.

I noticed that you specifically stated that you didn't bother to read the dev diaries. If you did, you would have read their sound reasoning behind the inability to play as Muslims. Please read before you get so disappointed next time.

I would definitely try the TW mods if you're interested in improving the experience. I love Paradox games and think its an amazing company, EU3 is probably my favorite strategy game of all time and CK2 looks like it will be in my top 3, but recent "meh" releases like HoI3, Vicky 2, and Sengoku can't even hold a candle to the TW games. They're simply spectacular, probably the single greatest strategy franchise of all time. And trust me, there are plenty of history lovers working on the mods at TW center, Europa Barbarorum goes wayyy past EU:Rome for historical accuracy and depth.

Hmm well they are now a different genre though. So its like comparing apples and oranges. I mean TW is now more and more an RTS title with some basic TBS play. Paradox is real time grand strategy - although obv like said above they are all slightly different and some are more grand strat and some are more management-history games.

Eu3 obv is amazing. Agree on HOI3 - never really got into it that much - still a fair amount of volume. I have bought maybe 100 games in the last 12 months so its hard for me to play games much unless I love them. AOD is easily my favourite HOI game (I think I had to mod the tech slots to really love it 100% though as I like playing minors). I would recommend that to you if you not played it. Vikky2 is decent. I enjoyed it but found it a bit shallow tbh and the shortness of the timeframe annoyed me because there wasnt enough to do each game. Sengoku I havent played but will do soon I expect.

CKII is no grand strategy game though. It's about relationships and marriage and child rearing.

Idd, but its still a grand strategy game aswell (well it depends on how we define that I guess). but thats the point of my earlier post, PI games have different reasons for playing, depending on what game it is.

...

Sure, but even there once you get outside of western europe the connection between the countries you are playing and the game mechanics gets worse. To a point even there people keep complaining that the gameplay does not fit reality at all (compared to the tenuous fit in Europe).

EU1 had limited choices of playable nations depending on starting scenario. I believe all in Europe (based on the board game). Although there was a mod that made all countries playable.

Their reasoning for this may be consistent but for me, islamic factions in a medieval era game is MUST. It is like not having Soviets playable in WW2 grand strategy game ( in fact, many US based game companies did this for many years ). Reading Dev Diaries will not change my opinion, they could only convince me that it fits the concept of this game. But again, this is just my personal opinion. I spent thousands of hours on MTW2 with Catholic, Orthodox and Muslic factions, it is too bad that scope of CKII is limited to christian europe.

Well like I said, they ARE playable, they just don't have all the events and flavor specifically designed for them like christians do. DLCs will probably expand on them, mods will DEFINITELY expand on them, probably pretty soon after release.

Does your Marshal's "arrest chance" apply to mid-battle imprisonments, as well? I had an interesting situation yesterday, now that I've reflected in hindsight: One of my targets had called on the King of England to avoid being assimilated into the soon-to-be Irish Kingdom. At the time, I was a bit shocked, because I hadn't paid attention to my target's allies. But reflecting on this, could I have laid a trap for the King, by placing my Marshal and Spymaster in the county where I'd know the King would be, so I could have either assassinated, or imprisoned, him?
