definitely the default, Conclave upped the difficulty enough that I have come back to the game and love it again, but I am starting to suspect that I either lose all my land in the first 20 years or dominate everything.

Always played on normal, though honestly the game is far too easy; Count -> Emperor usually taking less than a century.
After that the game becomes a boring grind-fest. (or, if defensive pacts are enabled, a boring twiddle-my-thumbs fest)

I've never looked into what the difficulty actually effects; is it just combat strength of non-player armies? or do you get a universal negative opinion modifier too?

The latter might actually make the game a little harder....
Though tbh the lack of difficulty in CK2 really stems from the AI's inability to play the game in the same way a human does.

There's no reason to mess with the difficulty settings when you can just pick a harder/easier start or enable/disable certain DLCs.

(Not sure what the right term would be; I don't think "Filthy Casual" is really appropriate, since i don't think 180 hours and counting (since I bought the game a couple of months ago) really qualifies...)

Principally because I find that enough; at the end of the day, I'm less interested in "challenge" (which geninuely does nothing for me as entertainment) as I am in "solving the puzzle" as it were, where the "puzzle" in this case would be "conquer the world." I am quite happy for the AI to set me up a long line of metaphorical dominos to knock down.

You may proceed to throw things now...

Actually, I agree with you. RL is challenge enough for me. At the end of the day, I want to play a game that interest me, with enough complexity that even after a million play throughs, it never gets boring, because-like life-it's never the exact same thing twice...

Just watching the insanity the game ai can get up to is entertainment enough...

I completely understand this. Whenever I play an RPG and there is an option to play "story mode" I always choose that.
