I like how it works but I liked the original look more (1st DD I think)

those gave a vibe (feeling) of a medieval world. these don't. they are too much of the 3d hype. (I know they are not 3d)
but they look like it.

the portraits look fake and feel wrong in the setting IMO.

(I hope they won't look like this in the final version) :(
I didn't agree with that look at first, but... after I saw this, I think it'll be great to have this kind of photorealistic portraits, if DNA and these kind of details are so important.

***
By the way, we don't have much reliable portraits from the X-XIIIth Centuries, but... we do have good descriptions. And also, many gravestones depicted the lord laying down in a more or less representative way.

For example, Charles of Anjou in a contemporary statue as Senator of Rome:

Or his brother, the Saint King Louis, with the most usual haircut in the whole Middle Ages:

Or this bust of Leon V of Armenia, with the very same haircut.

In the XIV-XVth Centuries, it gets much better: for example, René d'Anjou, King of Naples, Count of Provence and Anjou, etc

And the famous Habsburgs' big, long nose, prognatism and falling lower lip!

So.. if i don't want a chain-helmet on my head can i remove it ingame?
I don't think there wille be an in-game function to do that, but I am sure you could mod the Savegame file for one specific chracter, or remove it alltogether for all in the graphics files somewhere.

For m it's not important that portraits look real or 3d or 2d.
It's the RP aspect I find important and to feel you're playing a medieval game. (for instance I loved the portraits of Shogun 2 TW, they ware nearly perfect)

we'll see how this turns out in the end game cause right now it's too early and they change things alot :p

This is subject to change as we come up with more things that can change the look but right now always if you get a new trait or a new title or job. I think I also put in a random update once a year, but I cant remember right now. That would depend on performance impact if it stays in the final version but could be used for changing hair styles etc every few years if wanted by modders etc.
Performance was my concern. I will enjoy watching my king's beard grow, but not if it causes too much lag as the CPU decides if the other thousand guys with beards need to add a few inches this month. :) Seriously enjoying how this is turning out. 3d-esque may not feel "medievally," but these are looking like real people, which I don't think is a bad way to go.

Looks excellent. The possibilities of modding the appearances and outfits are particularly intriguing - I imagine it'll be a godsend for people making fantasy or alternative era mods, and, of course, for people writing comedy AARs. The shades were a stroke of brilliance.

Also, I noticed the character's name was Erik Stenkilsson af Stenkil. Does this mean patronyms for Nordic/Gaelic/Russian cultures will be in the game, or was it just coincidental?

And the famous Habsburgs' big, long nose, prognatism and falling lower lip!

Freddie Mercury was a Habsburg?!

there is some of that in the game but I dont know all the details which nationalities its supported for (a few anyway). I'm not on the CK2 project atm, I just wrote the portrait system so Doomdark can probably answer this better in a later diary.

No it seems it wouldn't be feasible in terms of effort required.
See the actual comments from Danevang (who is actually doing the artwork):
I'm wondering if some modders with plenty of time on their hand will be able to mod those in.

I believe we still have plenty of time ahead of us to learn about the game mechanics.
entirely agree, still a little more than a year to go, think I can wait with stuff that might lead me wanting to play even more.. :)
