I have been having difficulty with even starting Crusader Kings 2 since I downloaded it. I purchased the download code from Amazon.com and installed the game from Steam without any incident. When I attempt to enter into the game I receive an error message which I have posted a screenshot of below. I have attempted uninstalling and reinstalling the game several times and am still encountering the same issue. I have never entered into the loading screens of the game or have even left the desktop. I have manually activated the V C++ and DirectX installers contained within the Crusader Kings 2 download in the hopes that they were the source of the issue, but the error is still occurring.

I have posted screenshots of the error itself and the one part of the error report, though my computer would not allow me to copy and paste all the data.

I am currently running Windows XP and have also included a screenshot of the "dxdiag" report for my computer, if it is helpful.

I have not encountered any such issues with other Paradox games I have on the same computer including Europa 3, the first Crusader Kings, and Victoria 2. I do not know if this is an issue of Steam or perhaps the game itself, though I have no issues with running Empire Total War which is also on my Steam account. I have, however, encountered what seems to be the exact same issue with another game I purchased through Amazon and downloaded through Steam: Endless Space. I do not know if these errors are related but it might be worth noting that both Endless Space and Crusader Kings 2 are only available through digital downloads (no hard copy disks). I am wondering if this may have something to do with the issue I am having.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry, apparently I cannot upload any more pictures to this forum so I will have to write out the error message as it appears.

"ck.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

Standard procedure is this:
Please do the following:
First, run Visual C++ 2010.
Second, run Visual C++ 2010 SP1.
Third, run the DirectX (web) installer.
When that is done, go to Windows Update and make sure you have downloaded all .NET updates Windows Update shows you.

As usually there is some update mssing. But i have no idea if that fits your problem. Some Tech support moderator might help soon otherwise.

AFAIR an Athlon XP is not supported anymore as it lacks the SSE2 instruction set, you also should not be able to run any Victoria 2 version except vanilla as all higher versions require SSE2 as well.

Oops.
Just an XP 2600+ with 1,9 GHz for an AMD is not much and below requirements.
Processor: Intel® Pentium® IV 2.4 GHz or AMD 3500+

@Barbarossa79
Still, did you Barbarossa79 try the updates i posted ? Anything ?

I tried following the instructions you posted and still no success.

I also attempted installing the demo and encountered a similar error as before with the regular game. I guess Denniss is right and my processor is below the requirements. The only form of Victoria 2 I have is the vanilla version just patched up which explains why it's still working. I guess I won't be able to play this game until I end up purchasing a new computer, which is a real shame since I've really wanted to play it for a long time. It's just surprising since it's not as though this game has extremely heavy graphics. I guess I'll just have to live vicariously through reading AARs for the time being.

Thanks for both of your help though, for what it's worth.

Thats sad.
I stumbled about another post by Denniss where it seems it was only a security or naming issue regarding the Windows username.
Probaby not the same for you, but you could try what helped there nevertheless.

So i will quote him here despite the link:
Please locate your CK2 installation directory, create a textfile named userdir.txt and place just a dot in this file, then save it (you may have to start notepad with admin right to have write permission there). This should force the game to use local files instead of placing copies inside your documents folder. This should rule out possible permission or invalid path issues with your documents folder.

Probably won't help either, but maybe its worth a shot.
i just thought so as of this you said did irritate me
..though my computer would not allow me to copy and paste all the data

But it's probably what Denniss said above and the requirements are not fullfilled.

By the way, the above is not a proper dxdiag report. You need to start dxdiag.exe and choose the "Save all information". That file will include whats needed, including graphics devices and sound and such.
In case nothing helps, i'm afraid you will need to buy a new comp.
I basically did buy one only for CK2 too.:rolleyes:
