I lost all the territory of the kingdom of Jerusalem to a Jihad (only control a barony in the county now) and want it back. I retain the title to the kingdom, but I can’t call a great holy war yet, only regular and the de jure CBs for the individual counties.

Two questions:

1)Will the pope call a crusade for Jerusalem if I already have the title?

If he won’t or doesn’t, then:

2)How do I ensure that I can get him to change the target to Jerusalem?

I’ve got Thrace and Anatolia, so the likely target for another crusade would seem to be Jerusalem. I haven’t been able to ask for a target change in this playthrough, but remember doing it all the time in previous games. Is it based on the pope’s opinion of me? Piety? Is there a minimum opinion threshold to get him to change the target? So far the button has been greyed out and said I couldn’t even make the request (but that was with a brand new ruler with little piety).

EDIT: I guess I’ll never be able to call a great holy war. Thought it was part of holy fury update, but it turns out I was calling them in my last playthrough because I was Fylkyr of reformed Germanic religion.

Is that interaction still around with the new crusades? In the new system there's an option on the crusade screen to spend piety to change the crusade target, which I thought replaced the old interaction. Either way, you can use that option to re-target it and while the AI is able to re-target it back, in my experience it only ever does that to point it at Constantinople.

That said most likely it will target Jerusalem anyway, if most of it is controlled by infidels.

Got it done. Just requested Jerusalem crusade and was automatically installed as the recipient. I think I wasn’t able to request a target change on my last character because of low piety. Next stop: Outremer Empire. (The big dog in Arabia broke up so I can’t use great conquest. Lame.)

1. If the Ai think Jerusalem is "free" and follows their religion, they will never create a Great Holy War.
2. Jerusalem is not the primary thing for the Pope, if Rome or France is taken over by a Non-Catholic, you can forget about the Pope fighting for Jerusalem.

A recommendation is if you want Jersuslem temporarily become Muslim, form some alliances in the region, and fight for a claim war for Jerusalem and all it's titles. You can have four alliances per person as a Muslim. Once you beat the people who took you over, reconvert back to your branch of Christianity.
