Crusades for high profile targets tend to end in failure. I have yet to see in the current version of the game, in my save files, a successful crusade for Jerusalem.

I am not entirely sure on this, because I am think it might swing the advantage too far in the attacker's favor, but only those directly impacted by a successful crusade should be allowed to join. I think that would help the crusaders from being picked off easily. An alternative that I thought of would be the crusader armies quickly assembling in Rome when the Crusade launches.

When a crusade is in the preparation phase or currently ongoing, allies should not be able for military assistance. An attack or rebellion against someone pledged to fight in or currently in a crusade results in immediate excommunication. If you start a war during a crusade, any pledged allies will not be shown when comparing strengths. As for choosing a benefactor, I think that unlanded non primary heirs should be an option. Winning would prevent more splintering of land because the winner would become ineligible to inherit land outside the targeted kingdom.

If the crusade is successful, the winner benefactor should get more than just the capital county. The whole capital duchy should go to the winner.

Update: I won a crusade for Jerusalem just recently, but the win loss ratio for Jerusalem is too much against the Catholics in game.
