Crown of the north: a Denmark AAR
125px-Flag_of_Denmark.svg.png

Introduction:

In

map of Denmark 1419
danmsrk1419cn3.jpg

Red = Countries (sovereign) under the Danish King

Denmarks positives and negatives:

Economy:
Denmark starts out pretty well with a decent amount of starting cash and some pretty good provinces with decent incomes. On top of that Denmark is leader of the Kalmar union (established in 1397 by Margereth I), which basicly means Norway and Sweden are my vassals, giving me half of their tax incomes, which isnt bad at all.

Military:
Denmark starts of with a huge army compared to the size of the country, and a pretty good one too. The Danish army is at this point seperated into to armies, one being the Jutland army, consisting of 20000 foot soldiers and 6000 cavalry and the other being the Copenhagen Defenders army, consisting of 9000/1000. My only concern is that Denmark is leaning more towards Navy than army, giving lower than average morale to land troops

Navy:
The Danish navy is in superb shape, sporting 20 battleships and 9 transport almost matching if not quite the English navy

Diplomacy:
Denmark is in a decent if rather useless alliance with its two brother nations Norway and Sweden, which undoubtly will lead to some rather irritating and pointless wars from Denmarks point of view (Sweden will unboubtly try to kick Novgorods ass, dragging Denmark along aswell). Denmark also needs to keep and eye on its relations to Sweden if it wants the Kalmar union to stay intact (which i intend to). Other than that its not too shabby.

Position:
Denmark is in a pretty good position with lots of opportunities, one being the rich north-german states ripe for conquer, and the other being the Balticum, which could be and interesting area, although many of the states starts with strong alliances, much could be accomplished with the helpp of Poland and Lithuania.

Crown of the north: a Denmark AAR

The reign of Erik VII part I: 1419-1421

180px-

His IQ

In the year is 1419 Denmark was ruled by King Erik VII, also called Erik of Pomerania. He was an intellegent but hot tempered king renowned for his lack of skills in diplomacy.

King Erik was looking to expand his kingdom, and had a keen eye on Holstein as he had always disliked the counts og Holstein.

January 1st 1419

Erik called in his court to discuss the future of his kingdom, and when they were all gathered the talk began, until Erik out of the blue said:

Erik:What about Holstein?
His Steward replied:
Steward: Holstein, my lord?
Erik:Yeees Holstein, they would make a good addition to our empire?
Steward: ehhhm, yes my lord they would, but it seemds a little dangerous to mengle with them at the moment, since they are in a pretty good position in terms of allies
Erik:Nonsence, they are ripe for conquer!
Steward: Im afraid things are a little more complicated than that my lord?
Erik:Very well, explain yourself!

The Steward showed Erik a map over Holsteins alliances:

Steward: as you can see my lord, Holstein currently have alliances with Bremen, Mecklenburg, Pommern, Prussia and the Teutonic order, so in my opinion it would be would be too costly and risky at this point, if i may say so my lord

Erik having realised he was wrong about the Holstein question, desperetly tried to save his honor:

Erik:ehh, YES! i knew that, i was just testing your skills, of course a war against Holstein would be a wrong move at this point. You are dismissed

The court went back to their own business, and the king went to his bedroom dreaming of conquoring Holstein all night.

On january 5th 1419 Sweden as expected declared war on Novgorod. This was not what Erik wanted, he had no interest in Novgorod whatsoever, but in an effort to keep the swedes pleased Denmark joined in, while Norway surprisingly DISHONERED ther alliance and stayed out of the war.
This did not please Erik who wanted the Kalmar union as closely tied as possible, with Norway out of the alliance the stability of the union was threatened.
Something had to be done, although nothing could be done at this point...

On January 6th new Opportunities arose:
POLAND DECLARED PRUSSIA WAR!!!

This was all Erik could had hoped for, with the Holstein alliance at war, Holsteins position was weakened, sadly no diplomats were ready to deliver a Declaration of war, but if the war would drag our long enough, Holstein would be ripe for conquest!

King Erik quickly called for his stewars and marshall:

Erik:Holstein then!?
Steward:...
Erik:Holstein it is then!

on Ferbuary 7th the Copenhagen Defenders Army was moved to Jutland, to make preperations for an attack on Holstein as soon as an decleration of war could be delivered.

On April 2nd Diplomats reached Hamburg with a letter signed by the Danish king saying:

"We hereby pronounce you DEAD AND GONE!!!"

The wasn't any real war strategy. The entire Danish army was to march into Holtstein Besieging Hamburg, ehile the Jutland Army Would Continue into Mecklenburg to Besiege Lübeck.
The danish troops met little opposition since most of the hostein army was fighting poland to the east.

But on May 1st the Holstein made a surprise attack, coming semingly out of the blue. This ghost army defeated the Danish army and followed behind it into Jutland were the Holstein ghost army again lost, and retreated to back to Hamburg, with the Danish army right behind them. The battles and retreats waved back and forth once more, when finally the Danish army gained foothold in Holstein only to be disturbed by the homecoming mecklenburg army. This time the battleground was mecklenburg, luck changed back and fourth until the Danish army finally made the definitive blow on July 20th 1420

Finally on april 3 1421 both Hamburg of Holstein and Lübeck of Mecklenburg were captured, and the Holstein (as Erik called it) alliance was dissolved, leaving Holstein and Mecklenburg all alone.

On the same day Erik recieved good news: Norway was back in the fold, as they had agreed to reenter the alliance. the union was safe.... for now!

This ends the update. Peace resolutions will come in the next update (tomorrow) since im pretty tired and can't seem to make up my mind about it right now.

Some closing comments:
Im still trying to figure out how to write this AAR, so the style may change a bit. The next updates will feature more pictures, an more indebt coverage of wars, the reason for the not so througout step to step coverage of the wa against hostein is that i had already played throug this way when i decided to write this AAR, but i assure you that ill be more througout from now on...

Crown of the north: a Denmark AAR

The reign of Erik VII part II: The Holstein peace, and the Pommeranian conflict 1421-1422

After 2 years of conflict with the Hansatic Leage peace was finally concluded on may 10 1421

Even though the annexation of Holstein was the initial goal of the war, the conquer og Mecklenburg made King Erik revise his priorities. Both nations could be annexed by force, but this would seriosly affect Denmarks relations to all catholic nations, therefore it was decide that only one would be annexed, while the other would become a vassal. King Erik chose to annex Mecklenburg because of its good income and rich CoT, which possibly could supply Denmark with an additional economic boost, while Holstein would be vassalized with the intend to diplo-annex in the future.

and so it was:

Vassals of Denmark in 1421: Sweden, Norway and Holstein

Although King Erik VII was known for his lack of diplomatic skills, he nevertheless made an effort the same day peace was conluded with the german states. Diplomats had been sent to Sweden in order to try an better relations, and on May 10th 1421 they cam e back with good news:
swedrasao6.jpg

Things were good in Denmark, and King Erik had proved that despite what everyone else says, he was an able king...

The holsteing war had another effect: The alliance across the baltic was scattered now only consisting of Prussia and the Teutonic Knights, thus leaving Pommerania out in the cold.

Pommerania suffered greatly during their war against poland now only fielding 2000 troops on top of being in no alliance. This opportunity had to be taken advantage of

King Erik was eager to get hold of Pommerania, being his birthplace and in a good position for futher conquest along the blatic coastline

and so a plan for invasion was made

The situation in Pommerania:
pommern1421nh4.jpg
again the plan was pretty straight forward, only one direction to go

and so on August 2 1421:
wariy2.jpg

The entire danish army (now only consisting of 19000 men) march towards hinterpommeren to defeat the pathetic army of Pommerania, the battle was short and a clear Danish victory. After the victorious battle, 5000 men laid siege to hinterpommern while the rest marched towards vor Pommern to lay siege there. Minor uprisings came and went, but the danish troops stood thier ground, and Pommerania was quickly rendered unable to raise any significant force.

Also in an effort to avoid interference from other german nations, royal marriages was arranged with hannover August 15

On the 22th of March 1422 Hinterpommeren fell to the Danish troops, finally followed by vor Pommern on the 15th may 1422
vorpommernsurrenderuv5.jpg

On the 19th of June 1422 peace was conluded. It was a good peace: Denmark gained the province of Hinterpommern, and pommern became vassal under the Danish King

Erik had led another succesfull war.

The map of denmark 1422 after the war in Pommerania:

now with pommerania as an additional vassal weee!;)

This ends this small update, im planning another update this weekend, with more about the plans for the future of King Eriks realm...

Have you set yourself goals other than keeping the Kalmar union alive? Good luck!!

thx...
Yes i have set some goals, forgot to post them ( )

Theyll be in the next update

What i can tell you now is that my primary goal is definetly to unite the entire kalmar union under the Danish flag

Also in the next update we will take a peek into King Erik's secret plan for the future of his kingdom, with the baltic being a major factor towards northern supremacy...

Crown of the north: a Denmark AAR

The planning for the future of Denmark

The Mecklenburg Conference 1422:

lubekakolorowalitografiaksic485c5bckowaxivwoh2.jpg

Lübeck 1422

On August the 2nd 1422 King Erik gathered with the danish dukes in Lübeck, Mecklenburg to discuss the future of the Danish Kingdom (or empire as Erik liked to call it), after the to succesfull wars against Holstein and Pommerania.

Denmark was in a good position, it was decently powerfull and still leader of the Kalmar Union. Namely the stability of the Kalmar union was the primary consern. Although Erik had Recently improved Denmarks relations with Sweden substansially in a succesfull diplomatic move, he also realised that Sweden was a growing power, and perhaps the largest indirect threat to the upholding of the Kalmar union, therefore a plan had to be made to secure danish supremacy in Scandinavia.
after several hours debate, it was clear that not only did Denmark have to stay on good terms with Sweden, it also had to consoledate its power in order to keep Sweden
into the fold.

Thus long term goals where written down which would have to be accomplished in order to secure Denmarks interests.

The first important goal was to make sure to keep the swedish population content, which would be accomplished by investing money to if necessary buy their happines.

But this would't be enough, If Sweden became avare of its potential power it would most likely leave the union and become a potential threat to Denmark in Scandinavia. Therefore Denmark had to expand its influence and gain more power in order to always be on the top of the union.

How could this be done?

Two plans where made for the expansion of Danish power.

One option was to expand into northern germany as opportunitiea arose, but this would be potentially dangerous, and would very likely lead Denmark into many conflicts.

Therefore a second and final plan was deviced. Denmark was to expand its territories into the baltic alnog the coast. This plan had two positive sides:

It would hinder Swedish supremacy in the baltic
and it put Denmark in a good position for Scandinavian dominance, and maybe even bring another CoT into the realm if Kurland could be conquered.

The plan was now ready:

Denmark would invest in relations towards Sweden as often as possible
Denmark wouls seize any opportunity it could to expand along the baltic coast.

The plan looked good, but here where two issues which had to be considered.

the first was that the Polish had siezed Danzig from prussia, blocking the way into Prussia and the Teutonic order

and two: It would take considerable time to accomplish this feat

Erik realised that it was very unlikely that this would be accomplished during his time as a King, therefore the plan was made a sacred call for all danish kings after him, it was a matter of survivel and future of the Danish Empire (as he called it). However there was hope, Sweden wasnt very powerfull yet, and if the plan could be accomplished by the beginning og the 16th century (1500 red) Denmark would be in a superb position to intigrate Sweden fully into the empire together with Norway, thus forging the most powerfull and stable union ever!

The meeting ended the 5th of August 1422, a future plan for Denmark had been made, to stand the test of time...

The plan
theplanxr6.jpg
Land to be conquered before the year 1500

---------------------------------------------------------------------
So heres my goal:
I want the entire southern baltic coastlinel, keep good relations to Sweden (and Norway) and finally try and diplo annex Sweden and Norway together with the entire baltic coast, thus forging a powerfull northern empire :D :D .

Sounds like a fine plan. The only thing to be slightly aware of is your BB. You don't want that to get too high or you could be chest-high in enemies quicker than you could say "annexation" ;)

Getting the baltic coastline before either Poland or Lithuania (not to mention Sweden) should be not that easy.

Yeah thats the challenge. Any Swedish expansion would cause troubles, and war with Poland is probably unavoidable in the long run. I offcourse hope to succeed, but the plan is very fragile in some respects, granted;)

I like your plans for conquest. Very nice AAR. A good easy to read style and of course pictures are always nice. It is interesting to follow this and the Norwegian and Swedish AARs currently underway.

Glad you like it :) Im somewhat inexperienced when it comes to writing AAR's, so positive feedback is always nice :D

Your atempt at control swedish migth will prove futile and I would recomend you to not even try and accept that Denmarks place is as Swedens bitch! :p But good luck to you anyway and I would like to congratulate you to a good debute in the AAR community!

Alas, an all too common problem. Real life does have this habit of getting in the way ;)

As and when you can. We'll be here.
