If you control some bit of land that you're not interested in. So, you might release a vassal for role-playing reasons or if the province(s) are wrong religion/culture (and you don't want to convert).

Best used for those areas that are costing more to run than they provide in revenue or manpower... for example, a wise spanish player may wish to rid themselves of dutch provinces even before the dutch revolt events start to kick in...

also, to extricate your nation from casus belli problems with potential enemies... if not owning a certain province will reduce the liklihood of a declaration of war that could cost much money, or even more provinces, then it constitutions a fair investment...

imho, anyway...

To reduce BB (1 BB/province)*. Being decentralized makes you greatly benefit from some vassals, as it gives a reduction on tech- and stab-costs (in the betas, not in plain 1.08).

* an exploit useful for some countries : if your territory covered by cores includes a lot of one-province potential revolters/vassals, you may declare war to a neighbouring country (neighbouring those provinces), release a vassal and invite him in your alliance. It'll be force-annexed. Repeat several times with different vassals, then take your cores back ( BB free). Your BB will have decreased by the number of vassals you'll have released. But this is an exploit. ;)

There are legitimate reasons for releasing vassals. Not every player seeks a world conquest. Some reasons are the following:

1. Quasi-historical role-playing. You release the Dutch because the game will be more fun with an active Netherlands in play.

2. Managing revolt risk. You release a clump of wrong culture and/or wrong religion provinces, getting rid of a lot of troublemakers.

3. Increasing your challenge. Having crushed most of Europe with your overpowered country, you release a small or midsize vassal and resume your game with this weaker nation.

4. Machiavellian growth: you release a vassal to do some dirty work for you, then reannex them with only very moderate cost in badboy. Personally I think this is a gamey tactic but it is very clever.

5. Just use your imagination. The sky's the limit!

Edit: Four replies while I was composing this post! I need to work out more so I can post faster!

Some events can also be triggered by releasing vassals, eg if you are Brandenburg and happen to hold Prussia and Kleves (on which you have no cores), you cna release them as vassals just before the events that give those provinces as cores. Austria is another one, if you hold Hungary, release them before 1526 and by 1540 you should reinherit with a load of cores all over the Balkans.

As a new feature in EUII.............. I am left wondering why such a move would be considered. Playing England and 1510 own France and bits of Holland and Spain but why on earth would I want to consider realising them as vassals?

So u own a few dutch provinces... Once they start to revolt and u reach >20% revolt risk, I think u'll understand why it's better to release them. As a vassal u can easily re-annex them later on... with all those juicy dutch colonies!!

on the badboy rating.............does it decrease of its own accord if your behave yourself for a long period..........as am fairly sure mine is static?
Yes, there's a natural decrease rate, depending on your monarch's DIP-skill and on the difficulty setting.

Difficulty Normal and lower : DIP divided by 20, each year (or rather by 240 each month).
Hard : divided by 30 (or 360).
Very Hard : divided by 40 (or 480).

This means that a country with an excellent monarch (base 9 +2 for full aristocracy) gets a reduction of 1 BB in 22 months at Normal or lower.

I don't quite understand. I thought you didn't get reduced BB for releasing cores as vassals. Was that what you meant?
Or wait... is it only pagans you don't get reductions for?

I often release vassals to be my bufor wall or just to invite them to alliance, as they have permanent CB on some of the big neighbours.
