I managed to create a serene doge by mistake actually.
I fought a claim-war on the throne of England for one of my mayors (long story) and since he was a mayor he created the serene republic of England...

I don't think you can give king titles to a Doge though, but if you give a king title to one of your mayors maybe...?

You can with console commands. Otherwise, no. I think it's an oversight. I see no reason why an emperor couldn't give "kingdom" sized administrative control to a republic. I personally use console commands to do so.

Well, having king level city vassals is only a good idea if you want to make a lot of money, but he will have a -30 malus against you due to your government type. If your vassals are misbehaving too much find the reason in their opinion box and solve them, making the serene doge will make it worse when the person you give the title to is replaced by their successor and their "+ gave king title" opinion bonus goes away.

He could be having issues with lots of minor vassals and he wants to put a king between them and himself. "Out of control" could be, not their actions against him, but his inability to manage them, say, when drawing their levies. I've been playing a duke to king to super king to emperor, and let me tell you, once I became emperor and created a bunch of king vassals, it was much easier to manage my vassals. Kinda like being a king with dukes, or a duke with counts.

The Serene Doge went independent and won't join my Empire when I used the console commands. I tried 'give_title <title-id> <char-id>' and 'titleowner <title-id> <char-id>, both with no luck. :(

I am trying to create Serene Doge of Sicily. It is much easier to appease 1 Doge instead of 5. I want Sicily to be my cash cow while I sit back and sip some wine back in Constantinople. :D

Hmm.

Said Doge was your vassal? All of de jure Sicily are your vassals? You are emperor? You owned said king title? Use the give_title command.

This definitely works, my latest game I started as the duke down in Sicily, then rose up thru the ranks to be Byzantine emperor, and I also made the kingdom of Sicily a republic once I was done with it (the duchy of Sicily is one of the best in the game to personally hold). Although, surprisingly considering every county in Sicily save one bishopric is a coastal republic, the Serene Doge of Venice makes me almost as much money with only 2 counties. Might be that his counties are better managed.

You don't. What happens is, he inherits the title. If he's not a king level already or not your dejure vassal, he'll go independent, just as would happen if he inherited any other king level title from outside your domain. Though Sicily should be de jure Byzantine... I'm not sure what happened, anyways, if you give the title to yourself first then console command it to him, he gets the "granted king title" opinion buff just as if you had used the diplomacy interface.

Invite claimant to a foreign kingdom, grant him a city, press the claim. He will remain your vassal because he is already your vassal major, and he will become a doge because town was the first title he got.

Sounds much more "gamey" than just using the console commands to simulate giving him the title from the diplomacy interface. As long as you create it first, I don't really see it as "cheating".

Using cheats is cheating. It's not "gamey", it's just cheating. It does not work in multiplayer. You are a cheater and this is objective.

But "gamey" is subjective. It's only you who thinks pushing claims for nobles in CK2 is "gamey".

How to mod possibility of granting king-high titles to church/town guys? I can think of only by granting elective monarchy and they will choose themselves. But maybe mod sth to beeing able granting through Grant Landed Title?

I think not being able to give away kingdom titles to republics is an oversight with the mechanics. Just like not being able to destroy duchy titles a few patch ago when the player must game the mechanics just so Duchy titles can be *lost*, is gamey for me and unfun.

Pushing claims isn't gamey, it's converting those nobles into mayors and THEN pushing claims so that the result will be a republic that's gamey. Forming republics by giving away your own titles is fine.

Also, you're wrong about him remaining your vassal. He'll only remain your vassal if you are the de jure liege of said kingdom, he is of your dynasty, or he is already a serene doge. Otherwise you just gave away a city and somehow turned a kingdom into a republic, but still outside your control.

I added France to Latin Empire this way. It does work. And it does work in multiplayer also, unlike cheating.

And, again, it's just you who thinks doing this is wrong. I won't even use the term "gamey". God forbid us doing "gamey" things in a game.

if hes your vassal hell remain your vassal as long as you dont push a claim for a higher or similar tier title. so emperor pressing kingdom claim after you gave him a city will result in a vassal, a king doing the same thing will result in an independent kingdom.

Yeah I realized I was in the wrong earlier. I was thinking of inheritance instead of pushed claims.
