It also depends somewhat on your sliders as adding another monopoly will give your merchants a -3% compete chance everywhere which can have pretty significant repercussions. Ideally, your merchants are getting big chunks of the largest Cots, dropping their ompete chance while adding a lower trade value target and decreasing an existing wealthy one can negatively impact your trade income.

If you are splitting up a CoT you own the benefits are related to cutting down the chance a competitor will do so and adding border provinces to your CoT. There are also some tax and other potential benefits for the province you place a CoT in. If you don't own the CoT in question you have the added bonus of possibly hurting a competitor's economy.

Why does the AI create centers of trade in my territories? I got one in Cape verde. I didnt notice if that CoT appeared when the city got 1000 population, or later, but certainly, I did not create that center of trade. It appeared itself. Not that there is a problem, but its strange.

it doesnt create them specifically in your territory but in a random province, i forgot what the exact criteria is but i think it happens when there is below a select number of cots in the world?

As someone who has played the game since it first came out it always sounds strange when people are surprised by random CoTs appearing. In the original release that was the only way a CoT COULD appear; you couldn't create them manually.

If the number of occupied provinces in the world divided by the number of CoTs in the world is equal to or greater than 30 (un-modded) a CoT will be randomly spawned. The target criteria appears to favor cultures without an existing CoT then regions and finally religions but that is entirely based on anecdotal evidence.
