I've just started playing a game as Grand Duchy of Rostov and because my demesne is too large and I need piety to create the Kingdom of Rus I was planning to create a few Metropolitans. When I do so it tells me I should recieve 50 piety but my character isn't. Is this a bug, am I doing something wrong or what? Any help appreciated :)

You get piety for giving them land. If you give a bishop a barony or count you will get 25 or 50 piety respectively. If you are giving them a duchy, you are giving them the right to rule others, and no land. If you are giving them land and not getting piety, it is a bug.

It has happened to me before, but usually only after a crusade when I've given so much land to the church that I seem to stop getting piety from it.

Ok, sounds like my start is bugged then since I was giving my bishops counties and not getting any piety for it.
Thanks :)

It's bugged, try this:
right click on a bishopric-create new vassal-give them county.
Not sure about county but creating vassals works. Hopefully they'll fix it with 1.09.
