I must admit that "Exploration And Expansion" sounds good, but there's something "not right". I think it's the "And" in the middle. Don't know.
I'll add it to the list.

Well, my proposal wasn't "Exploration And Expansion", it was "Exploration & Expansion". ;) Does that seem more right?

Dunno. I read the & like an "and". But it is true that it is not visually the same.
Hmmm, I still like Open Universalis too. I can see that it might not be a good idea to get too much "bonds" with Europa Universalis, but on the other hand: it will be our starting point, right? So there will be bonds with it.

It's the same with the FreeCiv name: it still reminds a lot about Civ, and that's a good thing, IMO.

Ok, I can live with Open Universalis... after all it is one of the names I came up with. :D

We will probably have to do our discussions on another forum, as Inferis has said. The problem with that is there will probably be even less people around to offer suggestions and input (at least until things pick up).

There is great ideas from many other games that may be worth considering.... *dreams of the lost cities from sid meier's colonization*

I liked the province specific unit types from medieval total war. You can only recruit highland clansmen from scotland, gallowglasses in ireland, woodsmen in eastern europe, and etc. That would be a great feature for a eu like game... I could live without the tactical battle simulations though.

I think it would be best to hand out bonuses based on culture/lifestyle. For example, a nomadic lifestyle nation should get cheaper cavalry, or something like that.

Maybe we should start gathering a desired feature list? I'll open another thread for now.

I PM'd Patric with the question if we can use these forums or not. Depending on his answer, I'd say we'd continue here. If Paradox doesn't like our initiative under their noses, we can copy/paste everything and move over to the forums at Languish'. :)

Technical stuff
After a chat with NapoleonXIV, I got redirected to a very nice looking 3D engine. Don't know if we can use it, since the code is not GPLed. Anyway, I was thinking about using a 3D engine to display the map; this doesn't mean that the map will be 3D: the freedom of movement will be limited a 2d plain "hovering" above the map. No fancy different camera angles and stuff. Sort of like the Maxis people are doing with SimCity4.
Good idea?

I'm just wondering what'd be the benefit of this? I mean I guess it really depends on what the end goal of this project is. Is a 3D engine needed?

Not really no.
It's just one of the options, as I see it. I don't know if it will be any easier to do or not, since I've never worked with 3D engines before. :)
But the issue is very much open at the moment, nothing is decided yet.

It might make a better impression if you got the answer from Patric first *before* opening more threads!

Added to which if the threads *are* closed and deleted you will lose all the info.

Get the answer before expanding.

You're right, of course.
I considered the issue, but the only thread I opened was a feature request thread, which also could come in handy for Paradox themselves, when/if they decide to do an EU3 themselves.

I'll refrain from opening more (specific) threads until I get an answer from Patric (which was part of the original plan from the beginning, but maybe I didn't make that clear very much). :D

Yep that would make a better impression. You are unlikely to get an answer until Monday though.
