Call me crazy if you like, but since I've been following the EU3 Wish List thread in the EU2 Discussions forum, I've been thinking about creating it ourselves.

I don't know if any of you know about FreeCiv -- which is an opensource version of Civilization, created from scratch -- but it would be something along those lines.

I know you or I can't do this by yourself/myself, and it would require a healthy dose of project coordination, not to mention a thorough design fase (but most of that work is currently done in the thread mentioned above), but I guess it would be fun. It will of course be a project that will take a while, but still.

So, am I ready for the mental institute or not? :D

It sounds like quite a challenge - but very interesting. Could you post a link to a description of that FreeCiv you mentioned?

I had a look at it. Honestly, I don't think that something like that can compete against EU2. It's impressing work when you think of the fact that it's "home made" (I for one could never do it... :D), but it'll never get anywhere near a professionally made game like EU2.

Wouldn't it be better to make more patches like the unlimited time patch and the no population limit patch - things that changes/improves EU2 - instead?

Imagine the money we could won with the creation of the EU III :D :D I think that is very difficult to do and only a professional team could creat a good game and that is the think we all want right?

That's the first thing I'll admit, but that doesn't mean that a project like this can't set that as a goal, right?
When I proposed this, it wasn't (and still isn't) my real intention to create a EU2 like game. Chances are it won't be that good as EU2, of course. But I repeat: I'd like to do this for fun, and we'll see where that brings us. I don't want to rip Paradox by possible creating a very good game, not in the least. Same with the FreeCiv people: they do it for fun. :D

We could. But I don't find much satisfaction in stuff like that: I'd like to create things myself.

I haven't done anything yet, you know. It was just an idea.

The lightmaps were fun, but not so anymore. It don't mind being stuck, but I've been stuck on those for so long now, it's... well... a bit boring. :(

Nooo!

I was suggesting a similar idea like FreeCiv, which intends to create a Civ clone.
What I'd like to do is not really create an EU2 clone, but a different/new version of EU2. And if that includes EU2 compatiblility, so be it. :p But for what it's worth, it could be a completely different game, the EU2 of our dreams. Or something.

Hey, it doesn't hurt to try, right?

Well if possible, I think everyone would like *some* map changes, Inferis... I mean, if you want ot make EU 3, you're the best map-cracker out there so far

I am familiar with the freeciv project, and I must admit that I have thought about the idea of a open source EU clone before... but I never suggested it because I am no developer.

However, I would be very willing to help in such a project in whatever limited ways I can. So yes, let's do it. ;)

But we can't call it EU3, so how about "Open Universalis"?

Well, I am a developer, so maybe that's why I did suggest it. :D But you obviously need more people than developers to create such a beast as this would be. We need to properly put everying into a "design document" first, and not start coding right away. Consolidating the feature set is not a simple task, IMO. You need people to do the graphics. You need people to compose texts (maybe music? :D). You need event scripters (cos we can't use the EU2 events for obvious reason, unless Paradox allows us). Need I go on?

And Open Universalis, sounds like a great name to me!

I've been planning for a while to start up a project for a game kind of a half-way house between Diplomacy and EUII - a play-by-email-game. Although an OpenEU game would be cool it'd probably be a bit too difficult...anybody fancy joing me with my idea?

Play by email? I think that would be impossible for a RTS game like EU. Unless you mean a civilization game which takes place in the EU2 timeline... a fine idea, but I personally favor keeping it RTS.
