I'm making a total conversion mod to make a map based on a story I'm writing. I've only just begun making titles and provinces, but I want a certain title to be a merchant republic at the start, but all I can manage is making it a regular republic (which you can't play as).
I've looked around the internet and this forum as much as I could, but all I'm finding is how to create a merchant republic in game. There doesn't seem to be anything about making a title into a merchant republic to begin with.
I've also tried looking at the vanilla files, to try and decipher how they made merchant republics, but so far have had no luck in recreating this.
I've asked this question in the quick questions thread, but have either been ignored, or haven't had the question answered properly. I'm hoping someone might see this, and can either properly tell me how to make a merchant republic in my mod, or can point me to somewhere that can.

I haven't tried doing this myself, but I've noticed in the files of some other mods with merchant republics, they've defined family palaces for the patricians in the history > titles folder, by creating a file for a barony-level title and adding "holding_dynasty = %ID%". Maybe try that?

Thanks for the reply.
I saw, and tried that (not too long after posting this). I added such a title for all 5 families. But when I loaded into the game, on the character select screen it was still marked as a republic, and when I loaded in as a different character, that title had changed to merchant republic, but had also made 4 completely new patrician families (all with the same dynasty name too :/ ) maybe I made one or more of characters wrong. I'll continue to mess around with things, and see what happens. But thanks anyways :)

Is the capital coastal?

nd
Yes the capital is coastal. I know how Merchant Republics work. I know that in game they need to coastal and be at least duchy tier, and be agnatic. Once I actually load into the game as a character, the title in question becomes a merchant republic, with patrician families and everything. The problem is that while i am still selecting a character to play as, the title is only a regular, unplayable republic.

Hello everyone, I might have found a way to solve your problem.
I am as well creating a total conversion mod and encoutered the same problem.

In order to turn a republic into a merchant one, you have to create a special title, a family palace and give it to the holder of the republic.
For example, in \history\titles\, b_doria is one of the special titles needed for d_venice.

i can send you my map and provide further explanation if you want.

I hope this helps !
Goodday to you.
