So I have an idea for my second play through (first will be a human democracy) as an alien group with a Confederate style basically each planet is independent with an overarching federal government that does little more than handle outside issues. at first I was just thinking about pretending the Confederation aspect, put as many of them into their own sectors and letting them develop themselves and let them pretend to be independent.

Then I had a crazy idea bout releasing planets as vessels and then later forming a federation so each planet would actually be a free, independent planet within this federation. I however cant recall seeing anything in the game where it said I could release my own planets as their own government unless they have some faction demanding independence. am I wrong, is the possibility there? I suppose someone could mod that in pretty easily hopefully.

Also do you think this is at all fesable or am I just looking at a mess of independent planets waiting to get steamrolled by the first consolidated empire that comes along.

As long as you manage to get them into an Alliance / Federation right out of the bat it shouldn't be a problem to protect them and yourself from outside threats.

No Idea regarding the Release as Independent State thing though...

It's (sorta) a feature in EU4. Release as vassal and then grant independence.

Perhaps they'll make it a feature here. Maybe you can release as vassal and just do a vassal swarm instead.

Wouldn't the plan break down once the federation formed because the other Independence planets would go off an colonize?

That sounds lika a political nightmare, Imagine if each state in the us had the right to veto a decleration of war? Isn't that how stellaris alliances/federations work?

Such a decentralised government sounds impossible to me.

Your right, and interestingly enough that is how the early US operated, mostly during the Revolutionary war and right up till the Constitution we have today, we could have very well been a weak central power with the States having pretty much all the power and as you say it was a mess.

I imagine this whole thing would be an interesting mess, and unfortunately the colonization thing is right too, I would have to be the only one colonizing worlds so I could free them and invite them to the federation, the AI wouldnt do that. maybe I could use cheats on that and force the planets independence?
