Crashing on Startup

I've been having an issue for the past week where the game would occasionally CtD while it tries to do the yearly autosave. It was a bit annoying, but I didn't bother trying to fix it and just put up with it. Now, though, I can't even start the game up! I get to the bit that shows the Paradox logo in stained glass mosaic, and the music keeps playing but the little windows spinny cursor shows up, and if I click anywhere it crashes. I'm running on Windows 7 and I normally use the HIP mod, but disabling it doesn't have any effect so I don't think thats the cause.

EDIT: I also seem to have the exact same problem with EU4, which is interesting since I had the same savegame problem with EU4 as well. Could it be something to do with the engine they both use?

Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. Zip up your whole Documents/CK2/logs/ directory and attach or link that here too please.

Try the game with no mods active please.

Those aside that looks basically fine. Can you opt into the public beta please; Steam-CK2-properties-beta tab, choose 2.1.5.7 from the drop-list there.

You may have noticed many of those /logs/ files were 0 bytes, like setup.log - that should always be written to as the game starts up . This is something I've seen a few times recently, I wonder what could be causing that for a few people? Interesting.

Disabling mods has no effect on the problem. I was actually able to play for a little bit yesterday before it crashed, but it seems to be crashing on startup again now. I changed the refresh refresh rate and downloaded the beta but it doesn't seem to have helped, although it now skips the paradox logo and gets up to "loading history files" before crashing. EU4 is also still crashing.

Ok, now 2.1.5 is officially out let's try that in a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local files" in Steam
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.

If you still get problems, in Steam-ck2-properties-Set Launch Options paste this in

-skiplauncher

and see if that helps. And if I could get a new set of the files I asked for in post #2 please.

Clean install + 2.1.5 seems to have fixed it for CK2, though I haven't actually played, just loaded it up so it may yet happen again. I did the same thing with EU4 and it seems to have fixed that too. Do you still want the logs? Thanks for the help.
