Crashcourse (youtube channel who gives fast, high level views of important events) recently did one on the protestant reformation. Due to 1.8 coming out and being all about the 30 years war, I thought I would link it here in case others were really interested in what happened during Europe at that time.

I'm not and have never been a particularly violent person but the fact that that guy has a macbook with [insert generic edgy political message] on a sticker on the back of it as well as the way in every other video he seems like he's deperately overcompensating for the fact that european history is often over-represented by downplaying it to the point of ridiculousness just fill me with the urge to sock him one

To be quite frank, I rather dislike his videos. It (obviously) does not cover the full topic, but often times, it doesn't even make for a decent summary; only going through and emphasizing few arbitary aspects of the particular historical events, probably because they sounded the most interesting.

They're engaging for sure, but I'd be horrified if someone was actually trying to learn history through them.

Also yes, parts like "Catholicism had been the dominant form of Christianity since, like, the 4th century" is particularly grating, because it is quite most blatantly false; which is even worse.

As far as I can tell, John Green is very much a modernist; the closer you get to the present day in Crash Course history, the more appropriate the videos tend to become. As far as I'm concerned, Crash Course is a good place to start for people who don't really know what they're doing yet. Then again, so is Wikipedia.

Crash Course is great for people who want a (you'll never see this coming) crash course in a subject. Thinking of getting in to Psychology? Let Crash Course manhandle your curiosity and make you want moar! It's a wonderful resource to use if you would like to try out a new topic of self directed learning but have no idea where to start, horrible if you already have a grounding in that particular subject and/or no desire to go off and learn independently afterwards.

The problem with these kinds of videos is that, while they are ostensibly aimed at people with no understanding of the subject, in practice these aren't the people who watch them.

It's an inside joke that has nothing to do with communism. He's got pretty centrist political views, in that he likes a lot of things the left has to say and a lot of the things that the right has to say.

Well the divergence of Western and Eastern church began long before the Great Schism.
Maybe the most apparent example of this is the Quinisext Council in 692, which all the bishops of the west refused to attend and is only accepted by the Eastern Orthodox Church till date.

Well yes. After the Western Roman Empire fell in 471 (granted he might have gotten the Nth century wrong), before the reconquest of Justinian I, the Great in 555, all the barbarian lords, petty kings and such didn't bow towards the Patriarchs of Constantinople, Jersualem, Antioch or Alexandria whom they saw just as lackeys of the Roman/Byzantine Emperor, but towards the patriarch of Rome, also know as the Pope. Who didn't bow towards New Rome. And then New Rome lost Rome again in 751 when the Lombards conquered the Exarchate of Ravenna and gave Rome to the Pope forming the Papal State.
Imagine this, your fathers were held firmly under some oppressor. They were able to throw the chains of their oppressor off. Now you got a choice. Do you listen to the fellow who doesn't bow towards your ex-oppressor or the one that does? Remember, the "byzantines" didn't call themselves that. What they called themselves, was romans. For them and the barbarians that had destroyed the western part of the empire they were still the same nation that had begun on the seven hills on the eastern shore of Tiber.
